Ok so through my internet searching i found a 4.0 sohc v6. It comes with everything attach to the motor including the automatic transmission, the mounts for everything.

It only cost 350 bucks. Now is there anything i should look for? what else will i need to transplant it into my 86 with a 2.3 4 cylinder.

You'll need the radiator, exhaust including the catalytic converter, complete engine harness, computer and maybe probably motor mounts.

You may need more, so if possible I'd try to get the whole vehicle for the little random things. I'll be paying attention to this as well, I'm looking at a 4.0 swap in the near future.

You'd need to find a way to adapt the EVAP system too.

It'll be hell trying to adpat the engine wiring to the interior wiring.

The +95's are OBD-II and a little more complex than the earlier OBD-I stuff.

If I were you, I'd really stick with a 91-94 OHV 4.0 from an explorer or Ranger.

If you really want to attept it, may god be with you.

Well i think it sounds like i am stickin with the ohv. then.

To swap a Gen II into a Gen I takes some work, I'm not sure whether swapping in a Gen III dash would require any more fab.

To do the Gen II dash, you'll need to weld some mounts and drill holes as only 2 of the 6 existing mounts line up. You'll also need to cut out the hole around the steering column since the later once is larger. After that you'll need to take of the wiring, the heating controls and vent tubes.

thank you skunk, well this is sounding like more work than it may be worth.... I will have to see how the bid on the motor and transmission go.

sure be nice to get the newer 4.0 though, hp wise aren't they closing in on the late 80's 302 HO? Been pondering this swap lately too.

Yes they are. The latest one has i think somthing like 207 or 210. The late 80's 302 had something like 235 or so.
