I just bought a 92 (I think) purple Jeep Cherokee w/ a 4.0 I6

A good friend of mine got a DUI a few days ago, license revoked, and the same night his tranny went out when his dad was bringing it home. His dad wants to scrap it, but my pal wants to see it live on. $250 isn't too bad for it's condition.

I'm contemplating going down to 33s on my Ranger for better gas mileage and keep her as a road queen (with a little off road action of course!)

In doing this, I'll turn the Jeep into my off road play thing. I cry because of body damage on my Ranger. I could beat the jeep up.

For the Jeep I'm thinking about keeping the Dana30 for awhile, and using the 35s and Wheels currently on my Ranger. I'm also thinking about usin my Dana44 and 9" for the Cherokee instead of swapping into my ranger. Eitherway, it'll be fun.

I hope no one hates me for this.

thats what she said.j/k,hey if it works for you-do it!

When my Ranger died I needed a vehicle ASAP that was good (better, anyways) on gas...I bought a 95 Zuk that has been really good...did a bit of off road (on my front lawn...lol) with it too...my brother has been driving Jeeps for years now and doesn't seem too interested in buying anything else...they are a little hard on gas though...

I think most people on this website have more than one vehicle and I see many listing 'other' brands...

I'm not sure if I'd buy another sidekick though...hard to keep a convertible warm in the winter...especially with the top off...

Hey just so long as you stay true to your Ranger roots. And dont leave us, it will be all good.

Oh the Ranger's going no where. I love that truck. But no SAS on it at this point. Well, I might swap the Dana30 in from the Jeep if I decide to use the Dana44 and Ford9" under the XJ.

Not too bad for a roadster; A d30 Ranger on 33s (at least) Why not if I have all the parts? lol

Their has to be some type of 12 step program for people who buy jeeps.
Don't you feel a little iky?

Just kidding.Congrats on the new wheels

haha its purple. hey i got a friend whos selling a 89 xj for 500$ maybe you could try and talk em down and get it for parts. oh well i guess ill have to bash you a little now. is it a stick or auto?

I had a Cherokee about that vintage once. You'll need to do some pretty serious upgrading to making it an off-road rig. The rear springs were really wimpy on mine. It rode like a car, but bottomed out pretty easily and it sucked for towing my boat. I had to put overload springs on it. Mileage wasn't spectacular as I recall. The 4.0 I6 is a good motor though, plenty of power. It would smoke the rear tires with very little effort. Off-road, I was not impressed though...a car with 4WD.

The purple aspect makes me kind of cringe, but good luck with your Jeep.

iv been lookin for an xj to, you put a rubicon exspess 6" long arm kit on those and they are one bad trail rigs, iv always liked xj, you want to stay 1989 and newer on those, the 89 and older ones came with crapy running gear and tranny/ t-cases, check you might have the dana 44 in that if its a 92 or the crystler 10.25 both are good.

I would love to have a Dana44 up front. I still have my Waggy 44 sittin in my garage. And maybe a 6lug chevy (12bolt?) for the rear one day, but I'm gonna wheel the 30 till it pukes.

I havn't gotten it home. We're rednecking it two miles from the shop back to my driveway. First I have to address the tranny, and all I know from the PO is that "It's dead. It's effin dead"

Mike, it's an auto, but i'm thinkin maybe a manual swap.

Metalmac, I will keep the Ranger as a long term project. I'm pretty sure I'll find a place to store the HPDana44 and 9" still swap into the ranger, and maybe one day swap a 351 into it. Holy crap, I wasn't too sure people were still following my build.

My ranger is just too new and pretty to wheel hard. But I need a DD and something to beat the crap out of. I wasn't gonna go get some little ugly 80s car to cruse in and beat my babe up on the trails. Trust me my friend, I'll wheel the XJ till it dies, and then some.

I felt icky buying a Jeep. It feels like waking up the day after a dirty, drunken, shamefull one night stand with a fat chick.

F ... the XJ's seem to flex decently stock ... Throw a 2-4" lift and some 31/33's on it and let her buck.

If your really gonna wheel it, spend some time reinforcing the unibody. They literally fall apart at the seams if wheeled hard. Get yourself some junkyard shafts out of a 95 or newer XJ with the bigger joints. Throw some 297X's in them and tack the caps in place. The rear is most likely a Chrysler 8.25" which is not a great axle. Weld it and run it till it pops then throw an exploder 8.8 in it. You could have a lot of fun in this rig for not much money.

A exploder 8.8 was my first thought.

Either that or a GM12 bolt (that's 6x5.5 lug right?) to go with my Waggy Dana44 for up front some day

For the lowdown on your Jeep go to...

www.naxja.org

It's the Cherokee version of this site. Lots of good tech info.

A '92 is a good wheeling year. It will most likely have the D35C in the rear instead of the Chrysler 8.75 though.

Lift, header (if the exhaust manifold isn't cracked, it probably will soon :) ) subframe connectors/sliders to stiffen the unibody and then beat it to death.

Good Luck!
