The explanation of Vin numbers has the letter E for 2 different motors, the 4.0 is listed as an 'E' and as an 'X'. What gives?
 
Without going to search for what you're looking at, I will mention there are 2 different 4.0l motors in the Ranger lineage.

Yeah, I forget which is which offhand but one is a 4.0 OHV and the other is the 4.0 SOHC. There was some weird overlap, the Ranger got the OHV from 90-00, then the SOHC from 01-11. The Explorer got the OHV from 91-01 and the SOHC from like 98 or 99 until they went to the Ecoboost motors. Which means that a late 2nd gen Explorer could have a 4.0 in either flavor or a 5.0
