I have a 1991 ford ranger 4.0 4x4 automatic with the a4ld and i am STUMPED!!! so when i put the truck in overdrive(OD) it will move forward just fine, but any over gear (R,D,2,1) it slips really bad and almost feels as if something is binding up, please help

What does the fluid look like? If it’s still red and doesn’t smell burnt it might be salvageable. If it’s black and glittery and smells like burnt popcorn you need another trans.

When was the last time the bands were adjusted?

You’re probably also going to have to drop the pan and see what you find. Metal chunks and you need a rebuild at best or a trans. Some sludge and not really any glitter, I’d try a band adjustment, new reverse servo gasket and O-rings, and at least a shift kit and the shift corrector sleeve in the valve body and hope for the best.

People don’t realize that the A4LD requires regular maintenance, the bands should be adjusted every 20-30k and the fluid and filter should be changed at least every 50k if not sooner.
