Hey I'm a newbie here, and I have a question for those who have a hurst shifter in their rangers. I have a 87 2.9 5 spd that the shifter is slap wore out, and I was wondering if they are worth the money. Thanks for your help

Is the hurst worth it? I have one in my race truck and I consider it essential. On the street maybe not so much. Last time I checked the hurst was about $250.00, and a bushing kit is probably less than $50.00.

Somewhere on site, maybe the tech section at the top of every page, is a write up or post about fixing the slop. Also the "google" search bar at the top right of the page works better than the integrated search.

PS, welcome to TRS.

Thanks for the quick reply! Also for the tip on google search. I gotta have something to replace mine. 300ish just has me thinking a little harder than usual.

I don't think the Hurst unit fits your transmission. In 87 that should be an FM series trans. The M5OD that the Hurst units are built for didn't start until 88, and then only on 2wds. I saw your post in the intro forum says you have a 4x4, so unless you have swapped the trans out it is highly unlikely the shifter in question fits your trans.

Yeah, its a 4x4, my bad. ebay says it will fit 87 and it looks right to me, best I remember. I will have to do some more research. I appreciate all the help!

I remember seeing a thread where someone found a site with a hurst for the early trans. I don't remember the outcome and have to go to work so...

Wait, now that you mention it I do remember that thread. He found one that was listed as being for the FM145, but it excluded his particular year for some reason, and nobody was sure why, but he wanted to know what the difference was before buying it.

It was a fairly new product at the time and hasn't come up much since then. My mistake.

Yeah that was the one. Either way it is the only replacement for the frequently failing FM145 shifters these days.

An '87 Ranger or Bronco2 could have been made with either of TWO transmissions, Neither of which will work with the Hurst Shifter.

I have a Hurst Shifter in an '87 4x4 Ranger but I do not run the original transmission, my transmission is out of a 1995 Ranger.

the two possible factory 5sp transmissions are the Toyo Kyogo TK-5 transmission and
the Mitsubishi FM145. The Hurst shifter is not designed to fit either of these and is about as useful with either transmission as a part for a Klingon Battlecruiser...

The Hurst shifter is specifically designed to fit the Mazda Built M5OD-R1 transmission.

This trans was introduced in 1988 alongside the Mitsubishi FM146(4x4) & FM132(2wd),
but the Mitsubishi transmissions from 1988-on were very much 2.9 engine ONLY...

I consider it worth every penny of the price for shift quality and durability...

But I have to admit I didn't pay $300+ for mine, I lucked into it on a 1991 4.0 4x4
in the junkyard, which also had a Lock-Right diff in it (Yeah, got that too!)
