Hurst Rattle

Installed a hurst shifter today .. Im getting some serious rattling in 2nd and 3rd .. I was expecting some but not this much.

Im gonna do a run through tommorow and check everything and i might put the spacer it came with in to see if it helps any

So my question .. how much rattling is considered normal with these things?

it's normal. the spacer won't do anything for you....as your truck doesn't require it.

check everything out....don't forget to use locktite on all the hardware.

Yeah im gonna do a runthrough of it again ..
I didnt use any loctite tho .. so ill go back and put some on everything. That may be my problem. Thanks for the input

It's that the Hurst doesn't ISOLATE the noise like the stock shifter did.

Frankly I hate the noise, but I love the shift quality enough that I tolerate it.

Hmm .. That is a good point actually. I kinda figured thats why ford used that giant heavy rubber cover.

I actually like the meshing/shifting/tranny sound but the rattling just scares me. I mean it is REALLY rattling LOL. Maybe its just me beign a worry wart.

The issue is that you cut a hole in the rubber isolator because the hurst sticks up so much

And the Hurst transmits the noise that the breakage prone rubber shift
bushings (ford calls them "springs") do not.

So you've installed a metal part that defeats the noise cancelling effect
of the factory parts that actually prodrudes into the cab.

Most people don't realize just how noisy the Mazda trans is because the
engineers did such a good job of designing the isolators that keep the
noise outside the cab.

but unless you have a Mazda trans in a 4x4 you don't realize
just how bad things can be....

I have a 1" body lift and the Hurst shifter rubs against the
underside of the shift boot bezel.

My next attempt to reduce the noise will be to make a spacer out of
polyethylene foam (the kind of foam used inside fitted tool cases)

My plan is to use a piece cut to the outer dimentions of the shift boot bezel and a hole through it to the inner profile and using a second rubber isolator AND the earlier type soft foam isolator
above that and simply use longer (2.5") sheet metal screws to hold it all together.

That sounds like a pretty good idea! I kinda did that in my own less complicated gehtto rigged way LOL .. see below ...

But I found out what was rattling. I have binder clips holding my shift boot to the cup holder and the base of the shifter was rattling against one.. theres a big gash on the base where it was hitting LOL

So i fixed that and there was no more rattle ... just the usual tranny noise along with some rattle i expected.

Also I stuffed the first 4 folds of Hurst rubber thing inside my leather boot and it really made a difference.

Still have to trim the boot to fit.

My Hurst is completely "hidden" I cut the top of a stock shft lever off and threaded it so I could use the stock knob and boot.

I cu the lever off flush with the "ring" that holds the stock boot up

I really didn't want to be visible.

I am not using ANY part of the Hurst supplied boot.

I'm running the 02-03 Fx4 twin stick bezel with the hurst with the factory boots, factory Fx4 trans ball on the hurst, since I'm bodylifted I ran an extention on the hurst to better fit my hand to superior comfort...

I like the extention. I might fab one up because it sits a little too close to the dash for me.
