When my hubs are locked in, and the t-case is in 2wd, I get a rumble rumble noise. With the t-case is in 4x4 it goes away but is still a little rough. With the hubs disengaged it's very smooth.
It seems to be coming from the left side so I took it apart the other night. The only fouled up part I found was the little needle bearing in the spindle was very dry. The seal was blown out also. I cleaned it all, greased it up and replaced the seals.
This did smooth some things out, and did seem to minimize the noise, but was it the bearing? Seems if it was the bearing it would be constant with the hubs locked. The noise is back almost as bad again. I did buy another bearing, but didn't put it in. I thought I should probably get another spindle to go with it, if this is the problem.
BTW, 215k miles on this sides hardware. The right side was replaced somewhere around 120k.
Could it be the hub? When I go from forward to reverse, there sometimes is a good clunk from that side hub, like there is some slack there somewhere.
