I was under the truck yesterday playing with my front driveshaft finding out what the funny noise I heard was and I noticed as I turn the shaft with the front hubs locked that the axle shafts turn about 1/4 or 1/2 turn before actually locking in the hub. Im tearing the whole front suspension apart in a month or so and I was wondering if the hubs are supposed to lock solidly to the shaft? If so im going to check the J/Y when I go for a new axle shaft.

I'm fairly sure ~1/4 turn is normal *if you just locked the hubs in and haven't moved the truck since*. 1/2 turn still seems a bit excessive to me.

I'm not sure if this is the source of my issue, but I did some reading today and figured out I have manual hubs with auto hub hardware inside (locknut, etc..) although there is no engagement ring (or whatever its called) that the auto hubs are supposed to have.

So I guess ill do some digging for manual hub locknuts and stuff at the J/Y when I go for my new axle shaft.

Anyone else ever find this?
I only realized because we had to tighten my wheel bearings last year and for some reason we couldn't get the damn "rent a tool" manual hub locknut socket to fit so we had to use a chisel.

If that is the case you're hubs are probably pretty shredded on the inside..

Pics?

I didn't take pics of the hubs but they look fine and the splines on the axles look fine too! I'll check diagrams tomorrow for the innards and stuff but here's what I've got uploadfromtaptalk1400636647719.jpg

C clip, splined washer, washer with triangular shapes around it, plastic shims, spindle nut and outer wheel bearing

Best I can tell from that pic it looks about right. Kinda looks like you have the auto hub spindle nut though?:icon_confused:

Yea its definitely not the spindle nut for manual hubs, but i guess it worked so i might or might not grab manual hub spindle nuts from the j/y today. I might have been out to lunch on this whole thing haha when i put the axle shaft in the locked hub while its in my hand it hardly moves at all... oh well!
Thanks for all your help and advice though :icon_thumby: im learning quite a bit from tearing the ttb apart!
