The perfect is the enemy of the good.
So I found it, what you guys were talking about, to remove the hub caps. The wrench has rubber coating on the tip, it just fits the cutouts in the hub caps.
I'm planning to take off the wheels and take them in the other truck to get new tires mounted so they don't mess with the truck at all. Doesn't look like anyone ever used these things.

I never saw it with the soft cap of n the end. Must be so you don’t scratch yourself with the screwdriver blade.

Screwdriver, key, whatever i have handy lol

I think the idea with the soft cap is so you don’t ding up your rims and center caps.

The bad thing is, that soft cap doesn’t hold up really well to repeated use.

Most garages and tire shops just use a pry bar or whatever and ding stuff up. The common excuse is ”it’s just a truck” or “it’s not anything really nice” and I absolutely hate those kinds of careless remarks. I paid good money for my stuff and if anyone is going to ding it up, it better be me.

That's the metal version of the "safety lug wrench". The plastic safety lug wrenches had an orange tip. :stirthepot:

Yes, the coating prevented marring the caps, aluminum wheels and steel wheel paint.

I've run across a lot of people over the years that didn't know about the long jack handle stowed under the hood on early trucks. They're the ones that bitched about how hard it was to turn the jack with the lug wrench.

I have a cheap brake adjuster tool I made one out of. I heated up a short piece of tubing and slid it over the end, back about 1/2- 3/4" from the tip. It fits in the slot on my wheels and works good to pop off the center caps.

I use small scraps of cardboard to protect the cap & wheel.

What caps are yall talking about?

Those little stock tin caps that go with a stock tin rim?

Yes. The cap that covers the hub or center axle flange. A hubcap lol.

I thought they were held on with screws.
