im looking for ways to boost my Hp by 40 or 50hp without spending as much as it would cost to do a motor swap. i have looked into jet chips preformance moduals. they clame to boost the hp of a 2.9L by 30hp. has anyone used these. do they do what they clame?

will they do anything worth talking about?

Nope!

will they do anything worth talking about?

Not unless you are on the track! For around town and general use they don't do much at all.
If you think you need 30 or more horses for narmal use then you need a different engine to start out with.

my rig is used stricktly for mud truck competitions. it has 9 inches of lift and 4.56gears and welded F/R.

all of those mods and you still want to keep the 2.9? :icon_confused: that would be like knocking down an old house, building a new one, but keeping the outhouse to use but i bet you want to run the "stock" mud class but i know of a guy on another board that has a 4.0 in a broncoII that still complies to the stock classifications

oh and btw you couldn't pay me to weld my front diff......

well, that was the only conceivable reason to keep the 2.9.... .

the easiest and cheapest way to gain those kinds of hp numbers(costing somewhere around $500, and a weekend of your time) is a 4.0 swap.

ya thats what i was thinking. i was hoping there was a quick bolt on / plug in way to do it. if im going to go 4.0 i want to look for a 02 or newer one for the better power than the older 4.0.

A SOHC 4.0 swap is going to be WAY more work than a OBD1 OHV 4.0, the only way I see getting 30 more hp out of a 2.9 is a power adder, maybe an aftermarket cam would do it but nobody has ever posted numbers.

how much more does the 4.0l waigh than the 2.9. acording to the charts i read on another site the ohv 4.0 only has about 20hp over the 2.9. is that realy worth it. i see in your sig you are running an 88 with a 4.0l was the extera power realy noticable?

It not the extra power that makes the difference really, it's the 55 extra ft/lbs torque. By 1200 RPMS the 4.0 is already making 30 more ft/lbs than the 2.9 ever makes and holds that till past 4000 RPMs, peaking at 225 ft/lbs at 2400 rpms.

The 4.0 was a nice upgrade, I kinda find it lacking now, but driving a V8 (now with a turbo) daily will spoil you. I did recently drive a 2.9 B2 and yeah, you can sure feel the difference.

this is my 4th bII and i drive it daily, my engine started life as a 425hp crate motor. that got 2.5 points more compression, and a larger cam.......yeah it spoiled me. even a 4.0 truck feels weak to me. i rode in my buddy's 2.8 bII and it felt like i could get out and run faster
