First off, I'd like to say what a great resource this is for info and advice. There is no question you can ask that someone here can't answer.
A little background on my truck: My uncle bought it new and drove it hard until he had ignition problems (The key cylinder had a bad connection in "run" and would die and then come back causing a backfire which eventually blew a hole in the muffler) so he put it in his barn for a few years where Mud-dobbers got into EVERY nook and cranny. My Dad bought it and put almost $1000 in it, mostly cleaning the fuel system and replacing the tank but it never ran well. I bought it for a work truck but 10 mpg made it too expensive. After fooling around with it, I managed to coax 15 mpg out of it (mostly by disabling eec system). It has sentimental value so I decided to keep it and fix it up. The general consensus is to Duraspark it, so that's what I'm doing.
I never understood why the engineers at Ford put the EEC system on a carbureted engine: It robbed all the power and mpg's. Not to mention what happens when one of the many sensors (temperature, vacuum and pressure) stopped working. Then I remembered that gas was $1.04/gal and the speed limit was 55 mph in 1984. Instead of making the engine more efficient and burning less gas, they added the EEC to control emissions.
I may have "Sympathy for the Devil" (2.8l's), but it's a good truck (or it will be when I'm done) and I'm going to drive it until the wheels fall off!
So, thanks to everyone and remember: "Rangers lead the way!"
