How wide is to wide?

If there is a packed base under the mud (like a sloppy road) skinny tires will be fine, deeper mud and you probably don't want to cut down there only to find nothing is there.

Correct... Load Range E doesn't mean ten ply... I could see an F-350 sinking faster than a Ranger with most any tire, think about the weigh difference in the two... If you're going to stay on loose sand or deep snow wide tires would be better, but for most everything else skinnier and taller is better, ever wonder why Land Rover Defender/Series, Landcruiser, most every other off road light trucks always came with 7.50r16 or 235/85-16's?

Pretty much the same thing I said.

For soft stuff flotation is where it is at, a tactic everything from riding lawn mowers to tractors to bulldozers employ.

I don't think 235/85-16's come from the factory on any rig lighter than a 3/4 ton in the US... and a base one at that.

Ok, I see where you're coming from... Yeah, really deep mud would be a good choice for a wide tire...

Because we don't really have any vehicle made for heavy off road use, go look at how the previously named vehicles are used in other countries and it's mainly for carrying heavy loads off road... I didn't mean US vehicles, should have stated that, lol...

Oh, I'm not talking about the Ranger... Go look up the Land Rover Defender, or, more importantly, the Toyota Landcruiser 70-series... In Africa the 70-series is used for everything from mining trucks to ambulance... Actually, when US mining companies need heavy duty off road vehicles, where do they go? Not to a US auto maker, but to Toyota's 70-series cruiser... Those are the only 70-series imported into the states... Just go look at the specs on this truck, 5-speed manual only, 2 beefy solid axles, diesel only in most places, front and rear e lockers standard, fully boxed frame, manual t-case... Try and look up some Australian mining companies and see how they use their trucks... Completely stock, might I mention... Go on Youtube and watch the Camel Trophy videos, and tell me if you think a stock american SUV could do that...
