last few days ive first hand have saw how tough the 3.0 is..

first off. 1999 ford Taurus 3.0 with cracked block wont hold water, got pissed and decided i was going to take it to the garage and put in new motor so i get my brother to follow me the 20mile trip in the truck. OK im thinking no way im going to make it but go as far as i can well turns out i made it all the way there with no coolant and the thing still runs.

2nd 3.0.. 1999 ford ranger ext cab 3.0 auto 4x4 with 203,xxx miles on it. My brother decides to buy a camaro to use for parts for his s10 project. so we take off up the mountain and pull up at a trailor with a bunch of people with mullets ( seriously ). we load up the car that is complete with 400 trans everything this is a complete car. we take off and pull it up some steep hills to get it home and the ranger never skipped a beat. these hills are so steep you dont shift out of 2nd unloaded.

that's just 2 days worth of 3.0 toughness they might not be the fastest but they dont stop

Sorry for the rambling but im bored and been drinking :icon_pepsi: :headbang:

2.9 is still better.

Has torque to.

Yep. Got a Taurus in the drive way. Started out as a Hertz rental car. Then was purchased by a person that drove it like a rental car :icon_rofl:

Now it has 210K miles. No rebuild. Doesn't use a drop of oil. I mean not a drop in between changes.

I sure hope the ranger lasts that long. :headbang:

the vulcan has 0.1 more horsepower per liter:thefinger:

140/2.9 48.2
145/3.0 48.3

then we got 180 ft/lbs of torque
180/3.0 60 ft/lb per liter
170/2.9 58ft/lb per liter

the only advantage you have is you reach it at around 1000 rpms lower that we do.

i have a 50,000mile 3.0L that moved 7,500lbs from Florida to Nevada...the Northern (MOUNTAIN) route.

Needless to say, thats a pretty tough little engine. Got about 14-15mpg except for the huge inclines (7,500ft elev.)

I'm sorry but I just love the cologne v6.The Vulcan is exceptionally reliable tho. What about the Essex? Any opinions, I know that its not a ranger engine and the swap is alot of work but are there any current members who have swapped the 3.8/4.2?

Compare a 3.0 of the same vintage to the 2.9L...back when the 3.0 and 2.9 were running togther the 2.9 actually made 5ftlbs more 1000RPM lower.

thats why i said you make(it was supposed to say more not your) torque 1000rpms lower than us vulcan guys, in the original statement
unclear as it may be thats what it was supposed to mean

I'm not gonna make any enemies on this site an say there better, but ive had 2 rangers with 2.9's, and i must say, i love how well they run, and they take the beating i give to them, an then some lol

:headbang:you guys can have you 2.9s and 3.0s ill stick to my 4.0 baby

Right now I have a 2.9, a 3.0, and a 4.0SOHC.

The 2.9 is RELIABLE. It also does the job, even when the rest of the truck doesn't want too.

The 3.0 is decent. I think with a manual and not an auto it would be better.

The 4.0 has decent power, but pushing around a sport track (well over 4K) it seems a bit sluggish.

I still DD my 2.9

I love my little 3.0 litre. Its just seems to keep going, gets decent mileage. I've got over 25mpg on more than a few occasions and I love the sound of it for some reason haha.
