How tough are truck boxes?

I want to get one of those diamond plate truck tool boxes when I get home and get my truck next month. I at my base I don't have a garage and spending money on a storage unit would be a waste/hassle. Thus I was thinking about getting a box in my bed to store a few things IE:
-jack
-tools
-survival gear
-recovery gear

The only thing I would be overly concerned about getting stolen would be the tools. I was just wondering how strong/theft proof are they?

Yes.
I'd suggest putting on a heavy duty hasp and padlock for each lid.
Still, a good three foot prybar will get them loose also.

Someone took the whole box from my brother.
He left it in his yard for a couple of days to move sheetrock.

Only alternative is to go with a stronger, but uglier utility box bolted into the bed.

Locks are good for keeping honest people honest, nothing more. If someone really wants to get into it, even welding it shut will not stop them.

That said, most boxes seem to be relatively secure. I picked up a used box that had a faulty catch on one side. I was going to fix it before putting it on the truck (had to replace the lock cylinder too because the previous owner lost the key). At some point the box accidently got shut and I had a heck of a time getting it open without damaging the box and it was one of the cheaper diamondplate boxes. Once I got it open, I promptly fixed the latch!

My F-150 came with a plastic box when I bought it. Not very secure at all. And it was hard getting stuff in an out of it. I took it off and put the diamond plate box on for awhile. When I had the diamond plate box on, I didn't have a working lock for it. When I was worried that someone might open it up to root around inside I just wrapped a chain around it and clicked a lock on. Then I got rid of that in favor of a side box because I needed the bed space.

x2.....if someone wants to break into something, they're gonna do it. just try to make it as tough as possible and you probably wont have a problem.
