HOW TO: Truck cab back glass removal and install.

Here’s a how-to for those wondering how to install / remove the back glass window on any early model ford truck that uses a gasket to seal and secure the window. Newer model Ford back windows are usually bolted on and sealed with adhesive.

I've kind of always wanted a slider. Maybe now I'll pop one out in a parking lot.

Haha.

Only kidding, but I never knew it was so easy to take the glass out.

That only works on some years, i don't know the break off the top of my head, but my 2003 extended cab, and the 2007 reg cab i pulled my new-to-me slider from are bolted in and sealed with windshield adhesive.

To my knowledge, (93 and newer anyway) the ext cab models are bolted/ windshield sealed in, and reg-cab models are done like you have shown, with the big seal/ rope technique.

Just went out to check and confirm that dogboy. I have a 1993 Ext cab ranger with the solid back glass, looks like its held in by adhesive.

Damn. When I was gonna go to sell my Ranger I was gonna add little perks that would boost it's blue book value, now I have to take that off the list. Ha.

A rear slider adds 500 on the blue book. Pretty amazing eh?

there is no adhesive holding your rear window in. Its bolted in, and just has butyl in it to seal it.

Unless the rear window has ever been replaced, but then again even then my 03 had the gasket and adhesive.

Hmm, I used a steel welding table to remove the back glass from my F-350. Took the shop 3 different tries (supplier kept sending the wrong glass out) to replace it. Good thing I know the shop owner pretty well.

Is either way of holding the window in "better"?

Gasket vs bolted

Well you don’t really have a choice with trucks you get what you get, but I feel the bolted/ sealed has a superior sealing method, but I prefer the gasket system.

The gasket system is a breeze to replace. I went to the junkyard yesterday and pulled a slider for 50 bucks, replaced mine in 15 min. You dont even have to remove trim inside, just remove a few of the snap things close to the window.
