Well I have been looking a CL for New gears for my d44 ttb. and it seems alot of people don't know what gears they have. so is there any way to explain to them how to find out the gearing? or if I can I would like to find a d50 to make a 44/50 hybrid.
thanks guys

either the number of teeth or the ratio are usually stamped on the side of the ring gear and on the end of the pinion gear. if no other options, count the number of teeth on each and divide. im pretty sure the 4.10's in my truck are 41/10

I thought there was a way to tell the gears with out poping the diff cover. Like hold the one tire(if there is no locker) then place a mark on the on the oppsite tire and a mark on the drive shaft. then turn the driveshaft counting the ratations till the tire makes one complete revoultion. like 4.1 rataion to the one tire ratations equal 410 gears

it is two turns on an open bif

You can always take the cover off and count the pinion and ring gear. Divide ring gear into the pinion like 41/10= 4.10 just a suggestion.

You got it backwards, divide pinion into ring gear, but you got the numbers right.:)

If there is a tag under one of the bolts, the ratio is on the tag.
Also, if the rear hasn't been changed, you can get the code on the door tag.:)shady

When I got my Explorer axle rather than try to tell the guy how to read the axle tag I just asked for the axle code on the doorjamb sticker. It sounded like what I wanted so I moved in for the kill and drug home exactly what I thought it was.

Few people regear there vehicles from factory, and if still has the stock sized tires on it you can be pretty safe.

that way is really just a good way to guess. if you know what ratios were available in that specific year and model, you should be alright though.

unless your choices are 3.73 or 4.10
