How to strip a Bronco II

If i didn't know any better i'd swear you're having too much fun :icon_rofl:

haha looking good man :icon_thumby:

my favorite toys as a child were hotwheels/matchbox cars, and legos. i just moved up to the big kid version :D

dang it, if you lived closer to east tenn, I would talk you out of the back hatch, I would love to have it for my 89 BII, then I could open the window.

Robert

not gonna happen :thefinger: :icon_rofl: i have already taken it off and sanded it down for a quick rattle-can job. also removed the window and window weather stripping. gonna try and get the rubber "moisturized" so it wont crack (all the weatherstripping on this gray rig is in excellent shape, just dry)

its going on my 84 when its done getting "restored"

today's progress:

removed doors and took the inner panels off them. pulled off all the little parts i want to save, inner handles, trim clips, etc....

Photo0311.jpg

found what was left of a build sheet
Photo0308.jpg

cluster with tach
Photo0314.jpg

too bad some knucklehead broke it in half trying to remove it at some point in the past (they left the speedo cable attached)
Photo0313.jpg

while i took off the doors, a little furry spider was chowing down on a bumble bee
Photo0309.jpg

i wish that pic had turned out clearer

took the steering column out. the bearing inside isn't messed up like my 84, so this will get mixed and matched on my rig
Photo0312.jpg

stopped here for the day
Photo0315.jpg

oh yeah, this gray BII (that I have dubbed "The Stripper") has a roof rack in cherry condition. all the little knobs, slides, and pop up anchors work great.
Photo0316.jpg

I'm going to clean it up, paint it, and decide whether i want to put it on my rig or sell it.

Today I took the Stripper's tranny and shoved it in the Turd. hmm, that doesn't sound quite right...... :icon_rofl:

Photo0323.jpg

The Turd already had a clutch on it when i bought it, so i figured i would take it off and check its condition before putting the trans in. To my surprise, its a new clutch!
Photo0322.jpg

Also got a newer slave from "holyford86" on the forums.

the bellhousing bolts were actually a lot easier to get in than i had thought.

I used this
Photo0331.jpg

to get here
Photo0330.jpg

Used the hoist to lift the trans, just like how I took the old trans out. I let the assembly hang a little low before i put in the crossmember, and it made it much easier to tighten the upper bellhousing bolts.

oh yeah, in case anyone needs it, here are the measurements for the bellhousing bolts on a 2.9. the head of the bolt is a 13mm
Photo0324.jpg

also pulled some more stuff off the Stripper, including the petal assembly and dash wiring. kept the dash wiring mostly complete, since i may need some of it for the Turd.

Photo0327.jpg

Photo0332.jpg

swapped the (manual trans) computer from the Stripper into the Turd as well. opened the hood to try and start it. saw the brake fluid reservoir looked a little cracked, so i poked it. bad idea
Photo0333.jpg

also couldn't get the motor to turn over. that was a FML moment.

So now i gotta figure out how to get this thing started. when i turned the key on, i could hear (what i think was) the fuel pump. but no solenoid click for the starter.

I think there is a wire somewhere that told the computer that the trans was in P or N, and allowed it to turn over (this was originally an A4LD truck). Anyone know where that wire is, and how to "jump" it? basically i want to see if the motor runs before i spend ANY more money on it. I need to modify the wiring to where i don't have to have the clutch depressed to start as well.

I'm about to sift through the Tech Library and see if i can find what I'm looking for. Any help is appreciated :icon_thumby:

was it a pita to pull the clutch pedal?

was it a pita to pull the clutch pedal?

not really. unhook the petals and 8 bolts (2 under the steering column, 2 attached to a brace under the dash, and 4 that also hold the brake booster on the firewall). after that the brake/clutch petals come out as an assembly. I'll try to get some pics when i swap it into the Turd (looks like the PO hacked the auto petal cluster to fit a clutch petal)

Your looking for the neutral saftey switch? hit up the V8 section an you should be able to find a pin location for it..

The Turd is officially a storage building (for now). gotta get this other one scrapped so i can make room for a "more desirable" parts vehicle. only had a little time tonight, but I had tons of fun with the sawzall.

Targa top, haha.

started getting dark, so i put up the tools for the night
Photo0388.jpg

Walked out to the "corral" this evening
Photo0389.jpg

But something started to look funny
Photo0390.jpg

Oops, I dropped it
Photo0392.jpg

Photo0393-1.jpg

hmmm, clean floorboards, might have to cut them out and stash them (or sell)
Photo0394-1.jpg

E-mail me the back bumper off it :)

and the front bumper

Robert

if only it were that easy, haha

too bad you are on the other side of TN, i go to memphis every once in awhile.

back bumper is for sale, front bumper is going on the Turd.

I could get a UPS shipping quote if you are interested. heck, i shipped a tk5 trans (minus bellhousing and shifter) strapped to a chunk of plywood, inside a cardboard box, to Georgia for about $60 (plus purchase price)

picked up another (half of) one from Jason ("Punisher" on the forums)

Photo0423.jpg

Photo0420.jpg

Photo0428.jpg

and a whole bunch of spare parts
Photo0425.jpg

some of you may recognize what these are
Photo0426.jpg

averaged 17 mpg on the way up (empty), and 15.5 on the way back (about a 1.5 hour drive)

unloading stuff

oh yeah
Photo0429.jpg

spare doors. all but 1 have good glass. going to keep 1 set, sell 1 set, and strip the others for the good parts
Photo0430.jpg

spare core support. keeping the headlights, rest is for sale
Photo0431.jpg

spare hoods. keeping 1 or 2, 1 is already sold, selling the rest
Photo0432.jpg

keeping the grills and turn signal panel
Photo0433.jpg

selling the bumper and another core support (i may keep one of the core supports, haven't decided yet)
Photo0434.jpg

now for the big guy
Photo0435.jpg

don't ask how i got those front wheels on, it wasn't easy
Photo0436.jpg

don't have a come-a-long, so i put the hi-lift to good use
Photo0441.jpg

Photo0440.jpg

Photo0439.jpg

Photo0438.jpg

wish i would have gotten a pic of Jason loading this thing up. i brought the rear axle up with me, and he used a backhoe to lift the whole rig on the trailer. he set it on the rear axle and welded the axle right to the frame. i wont be using this frame (or that scrap 7.5 axle), so it suits my needs just fine.
Photo0442.jpg

oh yeah
Photo0443.jpg

Photo0444.jpg

later i'll get pics of the fenders and tube doors.

I was just wondering, How many blades do you go though cutting up a bronco II ???

Robert

was that a old project of his or did he scrap the awsome one... i really hope not but looking at the spidwer web doors those are off the good one arnt they?
