how to propertly offroad with a standard?

i have an auto in my ranger but i have off roaded with a stick. in first gear in 4lo you can pretty much just let the clutch out and it will just crawl away barely touching the gas pedal. when doing anything challenging 4lo is the only option but i do use 4hi in the snow when driving unplowed roads or fields.

slipping is just that: the clutch isnt locked yet and it isnt completely disengaged either. its slipping. slipping causes heat as the friction material rubs against the pressure plate and flywheel. heat burns the friction material, causing it to glaze which makes the clutch slip even under the full clamp of the pressure plate.

its all about keeping that heat down. hense you should only use enough RPM to keep the engine from stalling and let the clutch cool if you smell burning friction material.

A bigger engine is better because it's much easier to keep from killing it creeping up a waterfall and such. It takes a lot of experience to get proficient at that because you have to keep the tires grabbing while being really smooth so you don't overpower what little traction you often have. You have to be ready to surge or ease out smoothly without losing ground--you are slipping the clutch the entire time in such cases. An auto is better for this.

You are going to slip the clutch a whole bunch doing any kind of crawling. But it's a low power slip and not much heat really. Nothing like trying to pull out with a heavy trailer and way too much enthusiasm. Once you have this down pat, you won't even think about disabling your clutch switch. 1) you aren't going to kill the motor anymore and 2) it's not a big deal to restart if you do.

I never use 4-hi for wheeling. I can go 55mph in 5th-low at the rev limiter.

Another thing--shifting with a manual is often a momentum buster. You head into the mud in the gear experience tells you to be in. A big engine helps for this too. I try to avoid mud when I can because it's hard to clean.

I don't know much about 4 wheeling in mud, but I'm sure you can be Boggin down pretty easily...you may need to pay a New Fee in Barrie for off roading with the new government coming in...they are like a bunch of 13 year oids with a hammer on your piggy bank...

Dont tell me that little prick is back........

standards are better....ford's automatics always sucked....
standard= less moving parts
standard=lighter
standard=cheaper to rebuild
standard=not boring to drive
standard=cheaper to buy

period.......

You don't need one, if you know how to drive a standard. Sometimes you have to slip the clutch, no way around it. But for the most part they are right when they say to plant your left foot on the floor, unless you really need to go slower.
yep no clutch override wanted here.
if you stop on a steep hill put it in low range,

let out the clutch until it starts to drag and then transfer your right foot from the brake to the gas and let out the clutch.

if you let out the clutch enough at first in low you won't roll down hill at all or rev it and spin the clutch a lot.

removing the saftey is a bad idea,thats just inviting somebody to jump in your truck and start it in gear-potentially running over something or somebody

Auto's have less moving parts if you are counting mechanical parts. It also has oil bath clutches--like someone was suggesting would be good for a manual.

Auto's are MUCH cheaper to rebuild. I can rebuild a C5 for about the cost of an input shaft on an M50D. You wouldn't have to damage too many hard parts on a manual before you decided it was cheaper to clunk it in the dumpster and find a good used one.

Boring to drive is a matter of opinion and has no bearing on the subj.

Cheaper to buy--I don't think so. Someone will give you an A4LD and be damn glad to see it gone. I think Oklahoma was purchased from the local tribe for a handful of red beads and a wagonload of A4LDs. A C5 is cheap if you can find one. I paid $100 for mine and it had the t-case still on it. Go buy an M50D.

yep. true statement. you want to learn to off road with a manual then learn to drive a dump truck (or a Semi or even a transfer truck is a good tool) and apply what you learned about using your clutch in a non-synchronized transmission to off roading your ranger 5spd (except don't double clutch it ........ only an idiot would do that, that is the dumbest line in Fast and the Furious because some idiots now believe you can shave time off your shifting by double clutching in a race ............ morons) .

I slip the clutch alot off road but its low rpm and low speed so its low heat. I use the clutch to control the speed when crawling in my LandCruiser or backing a trailer with 40 tons of garbage in it up to the tipper in a landfill and i have logged millions of miles now and only burned 2 clutches. 1 when I was learning to drive a big rig off road and the other because some idiot screwed up the clutch job on my LandCruiser by doing stupid Idiot things because he was god's gift to a torque wrench and thought that step in a LandCruiser flywheel needed to be machined off......... Just cost me $540 for new clutch parts and $600 for the labor to change it.............

Just ignore me my rant ...... high on Vicoden

Get an automatic!! standard trannies suck balls!!:yahoo:
Hooray for laziness :icon_thumby: :rolleyes:

My clutch saftey is removed has been removed for over a year now because the switch broke, I don't miss it and I remember it's gone every time and I don't let others drive my shit either. I've never used it off-road to start in gear though.
