What sort of things do you guys look for when grabbing an A4LD from a junkyard. I just came back from a you pick with an A4LD as they're on sale right now for $60 :headbang: and I'm hoping it'll be ok. The fluid looked nice and cherry and didn't smell burnt. There was a rubber seal drilled into the bottom of the pan which leads me to believe it underwent some kind of service in the past. The odometer had 240K kms on it and it took a hit on the front passenger QP. There were other exploders there that didn't appear to have been in an accident, so I chose to steer clear as they might have mech problems which lead to their ending up ion the JY.

Just wondering what other things y'all look at when getting a JY tranny.

I'd just do what you did, check the fluid and whatnot. Pull the pan and check for metal shavings or grit?

Any A4LD is a coin flip. Hopefully you got a good one!

Who knows? But you have the right idea--find one that is obviously in there for another reason. Good smelling fluid could be a reason to avoid one. Changing the filter is about the first thing you do when your tranny starts to slip.
