My first time putting engine in and am having trouble getting motor mounts lined up and shaft in transmission at the same time. I am on my own doing this and any advice is helpful. Would it be easier if I drop the tranny?

well i have done hundreds of engine swaps and most of them i have pulled trans with the engine. the other ones we will set engine on mounts and put bolts in but not tight so u have some movment then line up trans and bolt up trans then tighten down mounts. its alot easier wtih 2-3 people though.

Yea, this is a lot tougher than I thought. I do have the torque converter bolted to the ring gear on the engine already. Should I put it back on the tranny?

can you explain this a little better?

You DO NOT bolt the torque converter to the flex plate before installation. Put the converter on the trans, push in on it hard and turn it at the same time. You will hear two clicks as the converter goes back as it engages the pump and gearing. If you do not do this, you will destroy the trans. When correctly in place, the front of the converter WILL NOT be in front of the trans bell housing.

To install the engine, you have to jack up the front of the trans. I don't know what you are using to lift the engine, but the engine should have a tilt to the rear. You lower the engine slowly jockeying it into place and aligning the trans.

With an automatic, connecting the two together isn't very hard. Take your time, and be patient.:)shady

Thanks. I was thinking today it will be a miracle if I get this engine running again. I will put the converter back on the transmission as you said and try again.

As Shady said, make sure it goes in all the way, shouldn't stick out below the front plane of the bellhousing. Also if you have been trying to put it in the other way, make sure you check the front seal in the trans as this can get ripped pretty easy swinging the engine in it.
