Hey guys so i have heard that you need to install a check engine light for the 4.0, well i havent done this yet and i would like to have that addition so i can pull codes if need be. Im not too sure as to how to do it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If I need a light to check my engine I just use a flashlight. :icon_thumby:

Later first gens should already have a CEL in the cluster. How to make it work with a 4.0 I haven't a clue.

You don't need a check engine light to check the codes, you can use an analog volt meter. There's a how to in the tech library somewhere.

alright well my 1987 Ranger has a Check engine light thing in the dash, there is a bulb i put in there but no power going to it. I know the 4.0 Harness i have has a wire for the Check Engine light, so i would like to know how to supply this light on my dash with power so when a code occurs, the check engine light illuminates. much easier than using the OBD 1 code check with a volt meter

Hook switched power to the CEL (which should be connected via the instrument cluster circuit board), then connect the other wire to the ecu CEL wire...
