finally got the tank out of my 88 bII and i wanna test this pump to see if it works first how do i test it? and how do vancei get it out, thanks in ad

You can put 12v to it and see if it pumps...although I would have tested that IN the car with a fuel pressure gauge because now you'll shoot fuel out of the line if you do it.

To get it out there should be a ring on the top you need to take a brass punch with a rubber mallet and get it to spin. Before you do that, take some compressed air and blow it out really good so that none of the dirt/rust that's on top falls in when you remove the pump.

When you get the pump out, cover the hole with a rag so nothing falls in.

Then, turn the pump over and drain it out into a suitable container. If you want, now you can immerse it in a bucket of water or something and put 12v to it and a ground to see if it's pumping.

^ What he said.

THE first thing to do before you start is either go to advanced auto parts and get a fuel tank lock ring which comes with a new O-ring

OR plan on not putting it back together the same day.

Why?

Because the rubber they use to seal the tank unit swells on contact with gasoline
and while you can re-use it it takes time to dry out and shring back to a size that will allow it to be re-installed.

This was done INTENTIONALLY because isntalling a "Dry" ring allows easy assembly and the ring swelling up creates a better seal.

If you have a black or dark colored car park it in the sun and just set the O-ring on the black paint (wipe it off first of course) and it'll shrink back to size

In cold weather I've had luck BOILING the O-ring in water to get it to shrink

Normally it's better to have a spare ring so I say blow the $8-$12 on another
lock ring and O-ring and just hang the old O-ring on a nail in your garage and let time shrink it... trust me, you'll need it someday:)

okay and i know this pump is bad i did the fuel pressure thing, i know the frame rail pump works cause i had it on a running truck but this one isnt pumping. if i got an old tank of a 84 bII could i just use the pump in the frame rail to pump?

No, the pump on the rail is a high pressure pump while the in tank pump is low pressure.
They work together to suppyl fuel to the engine. They can't be switched around from one position to the other.
