Ranger 1996 4 cyl manual. I was in a hurry and beating on the truck. Heard what I thought was a loose shrouding. Drove another 12 miles or so without problem except the noise seemed worse when in neutral and stepping on gas. Couple of buddies thought it might be a valve rattling around in the cylinder head.

Is there a way to diagnose this to see if the valve is the cause of the noise?

Stethoscope?

Assume one takes a Dr.'s stethoscope and puts it over the valve cover and listen???
They make automotive specific ones that have a long tube for pin pointing noises better than a medical one would. I think autoparts stores sell them. Could check Harbor Freight as well.

A long extension can be used as a poor man’s stethoscope. Stick one end to where you want to listen and put your ear to the other end

If you remove the accessory drive belt and start the engine... only run it briefly because there will be no coolant or airflow with the belt off... you can hear the engine far better and it would eliminate the noise coming from the fan or accessories.
