I have a 1997 ranger but my fuel gauge does not work. The speedometer, temp gauge ect does work but no the fuel.

Is ir most likely the sending unit? Should I get it at autozone?

And are there any tutorials on how to install it? I have a lot of gas in my tank but I wonder if its easier to install it from the tank?

Pull the bed, much easier then dropping the tank.

Will be doing mine soon.

i would check your grounds first on your gauge cause sometimes that fails, but like 86 said it is easier to pull the bed off rather than drop the tank, the only time i would recommend pulling the tank is if it was empty or close to it.

Agree, is way easier to pull the bed. 6 torx bolts and unplug a couple wire harnness.
I welded a spreader bar, with a padeye, used tiedown straps to each corner stake pocket and used a comealong from my garage rafters to pull the bed on my 84. The tiedown straps made it easy to correct level as well.

Oh, Yeah, and the 3 phillips head screws inside the gas door that hold the filler neck. Don't forget those or it's gonna lift funny...

Yes check the wiring first!!

Gas gauge is a resistance gauge, what this means is that if you disconnect the sender wire near the tank, with key on, the gauge will go to Empty, if you ground that wire gauge will go to Full, or visa versa.

Look here for the color coding of the wire to test.

Opps not sure it is on that page, you want the Y/W wire, (yellow/white) that is the sending unit wire, disconnect it and gauge should go to Full, Ground it and gauge should go to Empty, if that happens then time to drop the tank.

I can drop my tank in 20 minutes...by myself...low fuel level of course.:icon_welder:

I found a pick and pull junk yard, if I wanted to grab the sending unit would that work??

or just be more work?

Also, will a 1998 ford ranger sending unit fit my 1997 regular cab 4 cylinder?

the 1994 rangers they have are 2.3's and the 1998 ranger they have is a 3.0

If it were mine I would put in a new pump assy, not used.
Never do a used radiator either unless you like doing things over and over

Pulling bed vs dropping tank is going to depend on the truck.

My bed put up a pretty good fight before I got it off and it is pretty awkward to move by yourself.
