So how slow is my truck going to be before i do gears with 33"s and 3.27 in a 93 4.0???

Yo,
Speed isnt the issue, It is going to be very underpowered, and if it's a manual, you are going to go through clutches faster.

I would look for an explorer that came with 4.10 gears, then just swap out the whole axle assymblies(sp?). They are not uncommon and it would help out quite a bit in the power dept.

I plan on doing either 4.56 or 4.88 not too long after but i want to be able to drive it for a short time. I got a stock posi from ebay for 75 shipped so im gonna put that in the reas also. Would like a locker but they are pricey.

I would worry more about your clutches and expecially your auto trans if it's an auto.

Don't expect to break and land speed records either.

The speed of the truck should be fine with appropriate shifting, except in 1st gear.

It amazes me how many people assume you have to be driving around off idle in top gear all the time.

Adjust your shifting to the conditions, and it will move just fine. Correct your speedometer or you're going to fool yourself, though.

It will be harder to get going from a dead stop, but the top speed won't be affected, and neither will acceleration past 1st gear IF you shift it appropriately. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with 4th (or even 3rd) on the highway.

Yeah, that's why nobody changes their gears when going to larger tires  It sucks to be too high geared with big tires, nobody wants to turn their 5 speed into a 4 speed, you have 5 gears for a reason, so you can choose from a larger variety than 4, for the best gear in every situation.

Im not sure i get you. You think i should go with 4.56 instead of 4.88 with 33's on a 4.0? What should i go with? anyone?

4.0? 4.56. A smaller engine I'd consider 4.88. I'm sure 4.10s would be ok with a 4.0 but if you're regearing might as go with 4.56. Basically what I was saying is 5th gear will be useless with your stock gears, effectively making your tranny a 4 speed.

I have a 92 with 4.0 3.27 and 33's and does just fine. It takes a little getting used to with getting the clutch out at the right speed without slipping it to much and without make the truck shake. On hills it does good, at highway speeds in 3rd gear it will pull any hill. You will be fine.

5th gear is pretty much unusable right? I also noticed you're a fellow Washingtonian not too far from me, do you wheel your truck? Always lookin for more people to wheel with!

I use 5th gear on the highway but really don't notice much RPM change between 4th and 5th. I haven't done much wheeling because I have only had the lift for a short time and I have been tied up with school. Eventually I would like to find some places to go wheeling.

and ive got 4.10's with stock (~28") tires and its not a problem. you will be far better by going too low when you swap your gears than not going low enough. if you decide to go bigger on your tires in the future you will be glad you went with the lower gears anyways. if i recall, linuxman had 4.56 gears with stock tires and actually commented on an increase in fuel economy.
