how scummy is this?

Just ignore her. She isn't going to tell the authorities that you towed her car from the scene of her 13 year-olds accident.

Next time, call the cops and sit on the porch with a beer while the entertainment develops.

id go hook up to it and yank the car down the street, and abandon it in the boonies, i wonder how she would like not having a car at all, at least she had something before

And get charged with grand theft auto or grand larceny?? That's kinda dumb don't you think? Two wrongs don't make something right. AllanD gave the best advice. Don't talk to her, don't go on her property, don't touch her car. Talk to an attorney FIRST. If she is the type of person to have sent the bill, no telling what else she would be willing to try & pull once you don't respond to her at all. Some people are willing to go to jail to make a fast buck or even worse. Don't play her game. If she will LIE about this in the beginning, no telling what else she will lie about.

NICE GUYS don't always WIN no matter what some people think.

X2

And if she does tell the authorities, you have the neigbor as a witness to what really happened.

I think holding on to that letter would be in your best interest. It may prove useful to your lawyer if you ever have to go to court over the matter depending on how she worded it. Then again if she wants to pursue the matter she risks fines and court costs for her kid which could exceed the 1800 she expects to get out of you. Either way you've got neighbors on your side who witnessed it and maybe once it's over and done with you and your neighbors can hook your truck up to her house and yank it out of the neighborhood!

yeah i would try talking to her, if she basically tells u to piss off, go to your lawyer,

personal opinion, due to all the lawsuits today, i hand the chain to the owner of the car if they need a pull and say hook it yourself, im not going to be responsible for damages, but i will help ya

Honestly, I would have checked to make sure the kids were ok and left the car as it was. Then I would have tried to make them feel as bad as possible by telling them how much trouble they were in and how stupid they were. Kids today feel they can get away with anything and nothing is their fault. And their parents promote this as you're finding out.

Take the advise of talking to your lawyer. Don't give her anything that can be twisted into her favor.

In Virginia the state law requires anyone having an accident even if there is no bodily damage to anyone & the damage exceeds $200.00. If she lived here she would be fined for not reporting the accident AND she would have to pay for any repair to any property damages even if it were nothing more then messing up the ditch. That ditch remains the property of the state of the county depending on who has jurisdiction. AND she would also be charged for allowing her kids to have access to the keys of the car. They call that "child endangerment" in this state & they don't play around when it comes to something like this. I have no idea what CA laws are but she better be glad she isn't living in Virginia.

Aneighbor of mine was charged with "child endangerment" 2 yrs ago because she had left her 10 & 13 old boys at home while she went to the doctor's office to pick up a prescription he had written for her. When she arrived home, there were 2 fire trucks & the EMTs there because her boys had went out into the garage, found some gasoline & proceeded to pour on some leaves & set fire to them. Because she left the garage "unlocked AND the gas was accessible" to the kids, she was charged with child endangerment. She had to pay for the fire trucks & the EMTs "visit" to her home, paid a $500.00 fine, put on probation for 2 yrs AND had to get locks for the garage & have safety gas cans to store the gas inside the garage. I felt like that was really going to the "extreme" in this case but the laws of Virginia when it comes to the "welfare" of kids do not cut anyone any slack.

I can't imagine any of my kids doing anything like this. I treat them like humans, explain things to them, let them try things in a supervised manner. They understand cause and effect. My 7 year old mowed the back yard with my 25hp garden tractor. He has been running my backhoe for over a year. He rides a quad on a fantastically steep hillside. He shoots his BB gun by himself. He does woodwork and he's allowed to use a drill and a bench sander. He knows what things are for and is allowed to use anything he can prove he is competent and safe with. He's kept occupied and doesn't get into trouble like that. He loves doing his homework. The way you raise a shithead is to ignore them and only make negative rules to keep them out of your hair.

Kids that do these absolutely astounding things--I'd like to see what their relationship is like with their parents.

No, I take that back.

Sad thing is, the kid probably told his mom that he didn't do anything and she doesn't know your side of the story.

She's only heard one side.

a lot of the guys i know that drive tow trucks have to be very careful with customers cars as the insurance company dosen't want to pay for damage after the wreck and the customers can get very irate to say the least.it does sound like it shouldn't have been towed on all four though

Next time just leave it on it's door and drag it home.. That ought to piss her off.

:icon_idea:

yup, ignore her, call your lawyer. If the police show up or call to ask questions, just be completely honest. She's responsible for her kids' behavior.s

She will take $1800 and not notify my insurance or the police. for the damage I caused to her car.

after you talk to your attorney, if she has a caes, see if you can counter-sue her for extortion or slander/libel. i do believe she deserves to know the truth. dont personally go down there, but ask an un-biased neighbor to go down and set her straight. make a tape recording of what happened and ask the neighbor to bring it down and play it for her, therefore she cant accuse you to your face and get you all riled up. if she calls you, record the conversation, and if you start to get riled, tell her you have to go and hang up. if she comes over, tape the whole thing....etc.etc
