alot depends on where you live and if you need to go through emissions. If you do you will have need to get a full efi system down to the cel on the dash and ecu controlled trans. also depends on 2wd or 4wd. I was in the process of a v8 swap until I talked to the state waviers guys and learned that probably more than I want at this time, so now I'm looking for soch motor for my 87

Fast, cheap and reliable. Pick two of the three. I did a swap on a 2wd 88 Ranger for about $1000. It had a V8, that was about it. It wasn't that fast but it sounded good. I have about $10K total tied up in my engine swap and assosiated costs. The best answer anybody will be able to give you will be "it depends". Do you need to pass emissions, carb or fuel injection, 4x2 or 4x4, junkyard parts or new parts; the list goes on for a good bit.

well i would want reliabilty just to start with and it wouldnt seem fast to you guys but my ranger is 2.3 2wd 1990 and just haveing a 302 in it alone running would seem a lot faster

Here is my run down

Stock BroncoII - $1400
tires+rims - $1500
lift components - $800
Towncar (5.0L) donor - $180
engine rebuild - $350
T-case adaptor (AA) - $675
dana 35 + jeep hubs - $450

total into truck - $5330


V8 swap cost, about $1500, and i'm not complete yet, I'm hopeing the EFI will co-operate, if not I have a junkyard carb ready and waiting if i'm still not running by may. to run a 4x4 with a V8 you need the dana 35 front end, so that is another $450 for me.

If you can find a good donor vehicle with a good engine and trans then you will have most of your cost covered and should start out with something pretty reliable. You can take the engine and trans and still have all the harness from the donor to wire it into your truck, as well as other parts you may need.

A friend of mine did one for under $300. That is not including the hours of cutting, grinding, welding and swearing. He also had a huge pile of mustang parts. If he priced out everything it probably would have been around $1000, maybe more.
My Cleveland swap cost me no actual cash in hand but, If I calculated the time,electricity, cost of parts swapped, oxygen, acetylene, welding rod, etc. the price would be well over $1000.
If you have to pay some one else to do a lot of the work, I think you would be better off taking a different route.

Who would take this job on if they didn't have a vested interest in the truck???? My friend was laughing at me as he told me he wouldn't do this job on a bet! IMO it's a pretty serious project. The word "commit" comes to mind.

Its a very involved project. Probably not something you would do in a weekend, unless you bought all the bolt on stuff, even then sometimes you run into problems.

for me ive got

free 5.0L from an 86 cougar
free 2wd AOD from an 86 grand marquis(come to think of it... where did i put the transmission from the cougar!?

$100 core H.O engine from the wreckers(complete with wireing, computer sensors... everything attached to it basically)

$400 for the rebuild kit and oil filter adapter and chrome valve covers

$100 for an intake spacer to clear those stupid covers!(argh)

$40 for 1969 - 1986 f-150 motor mounts

$20 for misc steel(that bought me ALOT of steel)

$30 for paint

and im going to have to spend $300 on a 4x4 AOD and i dont know what on a transfercase

then im going to chalk up about $200 for msc stuff... like hoses, and bolts, and oil filter, and clamps, and pieces of wire, some sensors, that kindda crap

my totals going to be between $1500 and $2000 when im done with the 5.0L portion of my truck i think

Definatly!!! Think about it for a while, Be absolutly sure this is something you can do. PLEASE don't tear your truck all apart, then end up sending it to the crusher because you realize you've bit off more than you can chew.

I wonder about this myself quite a bit. If you think about what im doing personally... a 5.0L, an AOD with a transfercase to go with it, and a dana 44... those are all things that are bolted up to an f-150 from factory.... all i need to do is plop my ranger body on it.... makes me wonder....

THe james duff motor mounts are the EXACT same as the 1969 - 1986 f-150 302 mounts, just for your information, and i will let you know on monday how well they work in comparision to re-using the 4.0L facory mounts.
