How much have you spent in repairs??

i already gave my reply up top. too many problems, and i can believe all the money people have put into their trucks. i pretty much gave up on mine. and if you do come across my model of car in that junkyard or any other ones for that matter i could use a few things for it. not for the motor of course because it is an imported one from japan. came out of a RHD car. oh, the model of my car is a 93 del sol. pretty hard to come across. but if you do i could use grey interior door handles.

Ghost, I will search the boneyard for the del sol parts and you shouldn't give up so easily on your Ranger- with only a $500.00 investment isn't it worth your time & a little TLC to get her back on the road - on another note you said Honda motors are bulletproof and it now comes to light you youself are on your second motor ?! read my other post regarding the motor. i am trying to get the truck back on the road but the weather hasn't been great here in michigan so i cant get under it. plus it seems like when i fix something, something else goes wrong! i give it all the TLC i can give it. change the oil before the 3,000 mile mark. gave it a tune-up but i cant fix the previous owners neglect. changed my first timing belt on it not too long ago.

I payed $300 for my 91, owned it for a year or so, its got a 2.3L, automatic trans and i have spent less than $200 in repairs mainly tires

I must be one of the lucky ones.

Cricket is a 1991 Ford Ranger we've owned since 1996.

To date, we have put $1,200 into repairs, and we bought it for $2500.

I know, that sounds like "almost half of your purchase"...but consider...I'd much rather pay $1200 in repairs over 12 years time than to have to trade in and pay $400 a month on a newer car.

All we have done is repaired the cam, replaced the clutch (at 180k miles on the ORIGINAL clutch), and now the recent stuff with the fuel pump and stuff because it's still rough idling (up until 3 weeks ago, it was a no-start).

ETA: Oh yeah, timing belt and other normal repairs, such as oil changes and tires are in that $1200.

I've been subscribed to this forum for the past few months. I've seen so many repairs issues in these threads, and I know, Thats the main reason for the forum. But I was just curious as to how much you have all spent in repairs and what your driving?

I myself have a 1994 Ford Ranger 2.3l / 5 speed / 2wd. She has 150,000 miles.
I bought the truck for $1,500 and I've put roughly $2,300 in repairs.
I've installed a Clutch Kit, New trans crossmember, Radiator, Water Pump, T-stat, a tailshaft seal, PCM, CPS, Timing belt, Exhaust/Manifold gasket, a few dealer only bolts, and a complete fuel pump assembly.

Well, again, I'm just curious, so let me know if you'd like.

I bought my 93 scnd hand paid 1100 in 95 sold it to a friend he sold it to another then my mother n law bought it and gave it back to me just put in a the clutch kit from autozone for 127.00. almost paid as much for the tools as I did the clutch.,so now if any family member get me any gifts I want tools

Minor Repair Bills

I Have 241,000 On My Ranger. I Bought It For 1500.00 And It Had 152,000. All I Have Had To Put Into It Is:

4 New Tires - 300.00
Water Pump -160.00
Oil Change Every 3000 Miles

I Just Blew The Timing Belt And I Don't Know What That Will Run Me Yet. I Should Have Known Better Andhad It Changed When I Had Water Pump Replaced. Live And Learn.

What are you guys paying to have a clutch replaced at the shops?

How many miles did you have on your truck before the clutch gave out?

I bought my 94 Ranger about 9 months ago for $500 and have put about $500 into it (Lower intake seal, replaced radiator, new back tires), have to say I would rather be working on this fully paid for truck then paying payments on a newer vehicle that would also need repairs on occasion anyways.

Plus every time I fix something on my truck I end up with a couple new tools and I know more about how this stuff works.

i have a 88 2.3 with 133000 miles i bought it for 200 dollers one and a half year ago. It needed a new head gasket and 3 valves so one that fix it cost me 500 dollers then this last winter i brew out another head gasket but desided to rebuild the hole engine and cost me another $1000 so just in engine work about $1500

mweidner Thats a great attitude to have!!! Its how I learned how to fix stuff too. I also had to fix stuff on my own because I couldn't afford to pay anyone else when I was younger. Now that I'm older and have more money, I still like to do it myself.

Well alot of my repairs are because I can't afford to have someone else do it, but I am lucky in that I don't mind working on it myself, heck when the weather is nice I enjoy it.

Hopefully sometime soon I will be able to get a newer vehical and have my current ranger as a project/offroad truck. My parents own a 500 acre farm out in the middle of nowhere and I would like to be able to do some offroading without worrying about breaking something.

I don't spend much on repairs. I've had my truck in some form since I think 1999 and it has the same water pump, alternator, steering pump, starter. I busted lots of things 4-wheeling so those don't count. Heavy winching on the battery doesn't count when the battery fails.

I don't spend much on car repairs--just tires. Can't help that. You'll never convince me that a Ranger is a piece of shit if that is what you are going for. Mine always has a few problems, but it has never left me on the road dead. I did do some extensive work at 140,000--the engine was clattering ad the oil pressure was low so I replaced all of the engine bearing, replaced the oil pump, replaced the valve tickling gear and disassembled and cleaned the lifters. I also had to deal with a failed M50D when I first bought it--the previous owner never realized the shift plugs had failed and blown al the tranny fluid out. The Ranger is not a piece of shit. If you have been working on cars your whole life you can drive one, ask a few questions to the owner and look at it and know if it is a piece of shit. Just like someone trying to pull the wool over Columbo's eyes--it ain't happening.



I drive a Chevy everyday now for the last 3 years. It chucked a starter once and a waterpump. Neither did I let strand me. It was cheap to fix. It's a rock-simple truck with an old fashioned diesel and no computer. It requires a kick now and then to keep it going and extremely frequent oil changes. I would say a Gen 2 Ranger is better built than this Chevy. Especially the body. And I drove my brothers old 2003 S10 a lot and that was definately shit. His Dodge Caravan is shit too. When you get in and start driving you say to yourself, "this is a piece of shit". both the 4.3 chevy and the 3.8 Dodge are great engines--as good as the pushrod 4.0 if not better, but the rest of the vehicle is worth more as scrap metal. the body on the Rangers is pretty damn good. I've had mine apart a dozen times and maybe the door panel screw holes are a little cracked but it is solid still. Mine looks like it was drug upside down through a marsh and the power windows and cruise control still work.

Honda is the best car ever built. I didn't pick the ones my wife has driven--she buys her own car and I don't even accompany her to the dealer. I almost never drive her car. But in 9 years of Honda ownership I have NEVER repaired her car. Nothing has EVER broken. NOTHING. I change the oil and the rear axle fluid. I also spent 10 seconds replacing the air filter twice. I don't even know what the engine looks like. It hasn't spent an hour in it's whole life with the hood open.

I'm not going to buy a Honda for myself. But I'm happy they don't break.

Bought mine for $1,500 with +200K on the clock. So far I've had to change the fuel pump harness connector ($60) and the tensioner/idler pullies (2 x $20).
