Nah, I don't mean from eatin' too many legumes. Bein' I'm such a cheap SOB, whenever I got to town where fuel is about 40 cents a gallon less than up here in the hills, I go to my favorite station where it's least expensive and my generic smokes are a deal. I find that from first shut-off of the automatic nozzle to when I think it's really full, I can burp the system and add another 2-3 quarts. Am I doin' anything other than violating EPA/CARB/Algore rules?
It's an '87 2.9 4x4 5-speed, with all original Kalifornistan smog equipment. Is this harming the vapor recovery system or anything else?
I'm sure that others are eagerly awaiting enlightenment on this subject.

On newer vehicles where the vapor canister is below the level of the fuel tank, and/or positioned fairly close to it, what you are doing has the potential to damage the carbon canister, because when the fuel expands as it heats up liquid will push it's way into the evap lines, and liquid fuel will damage the carbon matrix.

On the older truck, like yours where the canister is both above the level of the tank and at the other end of the vehicle you should be fairly safe. Not saying you can't do damage, but the chances are much less.

Frankly, of the things you mention doing in your post, you are doing far more damage by smoking than topping off your tank like that.

Well, I'm Rob but you can call me Frankly if'n you want. :^)
Since fillin' the tank is usually the last thing I do before headin' out of town for the 20-some mile trip home, the filler neck doesn't usually have gas sittin' in it for very long.
I'll grant you that smokin' ain't the healthiest of habits, but neither is ridin' on 2 wheels, packin' in Kalifornistan without the official permission of the Commissars in Sacramento, or runnin' my mouth when I know it'd be wiser to keep it closed, but I just can't help myself sometimes. I survived a couple of years of wearin' Uncle Sam's baggy green skin and I figure that at 67 I'm not likely to change too much.
I do try not to smoke while I'm fillin' the gas tank, though.

Welcome to TRS Frankly.

, or runnin' my mouth when I know it'd be wiser to keep it closed, but I just can't help myself sometimes.

I have that same problem.

Well that's good.

Yeah, like I said, on newer vehicles it's a bad idea to top up the tank. Given the physics involved in the issue at hand you would have to get a pretty wide temp swing pretty quickly to do any damage the way your truck is put together.

And just remember, per OSHA regulations it is illegal to put more into a container than it will hold.

Ha Ha Ha OSHA says you can't put more in a container than it will hold,
ONLY the government would make such an ASININE statement like that.:icon_rofl:

Thanks for your service fellow vet, , I was born in Scrotomento , Mexifornia in 1948..As a young welp my Dad would take me up in Butte county area deer huntin', betcha it would be hard to find deer up there now.

Hey, thank you for servin', Mickey. I have a daughter who did 8 years as an airframer in USNavy and her husband is an Army E6. As for deer, don't go believin' that all the Bambis have been harvested. We've still got plenty.
adsm08, I'm glad you let me know about OSHA and not fillin' a container with more than it'll hold. Kinda reminds me of the Calif. legislature who, years ago, mandated that there be X number of electric cars on the road by 200x. After all these years, I think the total number of electric autos is still about a quarter of their original goal.

so that old trick of cutting the top off a rectangular container, filling it, then squeezing it round and adding another 40% will land my arse in jail?

on my 05 I regularly add another 1/2 gallon, sometimes almost a full gallon after shut-off.
been doing it for 282,000 miles.

on the 2000 I'm lucky to squeeze in another quarters worth.
