How long do you guys figure a 7.5/Dana 28 axle combo would hold up behind a 4.0?

I want to upgrade to the 8.8/Dana 35 one of these days but the two mods probably won't happen at the same time, and I'm trying to plan out which one I should/can do first.

If I can drive for a year or so with the 4.0/7.5 setup I'd rather get the engine first.

good.. i have an 8.8 limited slip in my 4.0L and its fine... just keep some oil in it and you should be good. im running stock 235/75/15 rubber tho..

Well Ford never put the 7.5 behind the 4.0 to my knowledge. I just want to know how fast I'm going to break the 7.5 if I don't swap it out before I but the 4.0 in.

I may be wrong on this, but I'm pretty sure they've stuck V8's in front of the 7.5 in the mustang, you'll probably be fine.

Keep a light foot, if you use 4wd don't throttle it with the wheels turned and avoid heavy loads and you should be alright.

Oh, and weight is a huge factor in keeping parts together...mustangs are LIGHT.

Exactly. The Ranger isn't a super duty, but its not as light as a Mustang either. In this case its the increase torque to move that extra weight that starts breaking things.

And if I find myself in a position where I would actually use the 4x4, a light foot is already necessary for control and safety.

I'd say you're just fine if you use a light foot and you're not rockcrawling with 35" tires and what not.

Yeah, the 33's (as big as I want to go) and the rock crawling are not slated until after the engine and the axles. I'm waiting until I have the axles ready to go to lift it so that I only have to take it apart once.

Don't drive it like you stole it and you'll keep it together.

forever and a day if you don't beat on it.

Ok, thanks guys. Engine first then!:icon_bounceblue:

I HAVE been driving my truck like I stole it with my turbo 2.3 and 7.5 with 4.10's and 31's and haven't broken anything, even wheeling under power with the wheels turned (usually on sand though), I carry around a 12mm 12pt wrench with me though... so I can get home if I break something...

the axle will live fine under normal use.

I actually watched that Gears show, with the guy that used to do Trucks! hosting it... and he built this Monster Miata with something like 500 horse v8, and put a 7.5 behind it. I don't know if that was smart to do or not, but they did it.

Or have it locked on 33's....

And yes, that was a brand new U-joint and all of the caps are there if you look.... Behold the mighty 2.9, lol.
