OK I'm new at this.

86' 4x4 aut tranny, auto hubs

back ground;
I got some different tires...went to install the Passanger side tire and noticed that the brake pad was not in the correct location,(retaining clip broke/rusted). SO I got spares of the donor truck, brake pads. the donor has manual hubs I was thinking that this would be a good time to convert my auto hubs to lock outs..seeing that I had the lockouts already.

when I got the brake rotor off I notice that the smaller shaft moved around pretty easily inside the rotor/wheel bearing hub....

IS that movement of the internal drive shaft normal?
is there another bearing that is bad in the steering knuckle ?

there is not any grease leaking from the inside of the steering knuckle/axle shaft.

also are the brake rotors the same from auto hub to manual lock outs? bearings and all?

thanks again

mine had that same play with the smaller shaft, im pretty sure its normal, it wouldnt do that with the hub on. i think thats why its hard to slip the hub on sometimes, that shaft comes out of line when you pull the hub off.

the rotors should be the same, the only thing a coversion kit comes with is some kind of bearing or something, nothing to do with the brakes.

Yes, with the hub removed, the end of the shaft is unsupported. Normal.

Only difference between manual hubs and auto is the wheelbearing nuts (autos have a single large hex nut with a locking key, manual uses two round nuts with a lockwasher between 'em)

HEY... thanks for the replys!!!

yea, looked over the tech library before I started this whole thing ..very good info there, spelling out what to remove and what is needed...Great job with that!!

I sat back and thought about it for a bit, seemed to be alot of distance for the axel shaft to be unsupported & did a some comparison of the brake rotors ....soo just reassembled the wheel hub, gave the outer bearing some new grease with the lockouts now inplace...there was no unusal noises coming from the input shafts...and everything works.

IS there a bearing on the inside of the spindle that attaches to the knuckle?
If there is....What are the symtoms of it going bad?

thanks again!

There's a needle roller bearing just inside of where the u-joint is.

If it's bad, the joint will move up/down a good amount if you pry on it with a screwdriver (as the bearing disintegrates, some grinding/popping noises (and possible binding) may be heard while in 4WD).
