how do you adjust downshift speed 89 2.9

oldschool here. p.u. doesn't seem to hold a gear long enough/downshifts too soon.
 
did you check the fluid level? low fluid will cause a trans to drop gears.

your trans is all mechanical...the only way to adjust the shifting is to modify the valve body.
 
Could be a long shot, but if its got cooling lines running through the radiator, check your coolant level. I had a leaky heater hose line in my Torino that caused it to down shift too early when it warmed up.
