Just got a 94 ranger...it originally had auto locking hubs...but was changed to manual before I got it...So I'm not shure how to use the 4x4.

I assume that I would lock the hubs manually then push the 4x4 button on dash. Once I'm done ussing 4x4 ...push the button on dash to return to 4x2...get out and unlock hubs...then back up 10 feet to disengage hubs.

Sorry if this is a dumb question...but the ford ranger usser manual gives no instrustions on how to use the 4x4 if it has been converted...and since I've never used manual hubs...just wanted to get it right.

yeah you got the right idea. However, you can keep the manual hubs engaged 24/7, if you want. you won't notice mpg loss and the steering stiffness will be little to no increase. the benefit of keeping the hubs locked is that you can again shift on the fly, and have a more reliable hub. Going to the mountain and shifting on the fly is a plus too, you dont have to stop and loss all your momentum when traveling through the ice/snow.

Do most people with manual hubs just keep them engaged all the time when in 2wd?

I don't think that 'most' people do, but I'm sure a lot of people wouldn't know that it is OK to leave them locked. It really comes down to how you want to run it. If your rarely using 4x4 then might as well keep them un-locked. Then again people say to keep them locked so that the front diff is continually spinning thus keeping the seals lubricated and prevent the rubber from cracking, however people say that it is not worth the extra wear on the pinion and ring gear when the diff is continually spinning. In the end it comes to personal preferance.

Ill keeep my manuals locked in bad weather in the winter..... if conditions are clear i unlock them... basicly only leave them locked if i think ill need them before i get in the truck... then i get shift on the fly
