Hi
I just acquired 86 RANGER 2.9LT
manual transmission
4X4 Shift On The Fly

I never had shift on the fly B4.

Can you tell me the procedure for shift on the fly so I dont wreck something?? :icon_confused:

thanks

It usually only depends on what gear you want to go into and how fast you are going...if everything is otherwise working properly and you are going slow, 4 low is OK...to go into 4 high you are only limited by how fast you are going...

Flip down the sun visor to see if there is a guideline for what speeds you can (usually) shift into without doing damage.

:icon_twisted: ........... I thought he was talking about the ancient rear-wheel art of shifting a manual without using the clutch pedal....

4hi any speed just let off the throttle so the rears aren't slipping. If you engage it when the rear tires are spinning faster than the truck is going it won't be good.

4lo you gotta be stopped an in neutral.

At least that's how my truck is.

My M5 is currently locked in 1st gear, but I still take my truck out on the farm every once in a while.

It's a 2 speed now! I just clutch it and pull or push the shorter shifter. It doesn't care what I'm doing, as long as the clutch pedal is on the floor.

This also requires Auto Hubs or manual hubs that are in locked position.

On my Auto Hubs when I switch back to 2wd, I often need to stop and back up 10-20ft to get the front axle unlocked, i.e. release the Auto Hubs.

If the manual is still in the truck, it has all the details you need to know on shifting in there.

If you only have to back up "often" and not "always" to release the hubs then something is wrong. That's how the auto hubs release.

If you are still getting front end bind when you probably have a little windup that isn't letting it come fully back to 2wd until you back up and let the pressure off.

There is no manual in the truck.
I dont know if the sticker on the sunvisor is still there, I will look next time I go to where the truck is.
I am hearing that if Im going along slowly its ok to shift in or out of 4H, BUT do I step on the clutch when doing this or not??

If your tires are not slipping, you can shift between 2HI and 4HI anytime you want, without needing to use the clutch. Even at 55mph. If your tires are slipping, ease off the gas until they grab again, then move the TC stick.

To shift into or out of N or 4LO, you should be moving less than 5mph, with the clutch pressed. If you are sitting still, you don't need to use the clutch.

Spott

Doesn't it say on the sunvisor?

Neither of my sunvisor stickers say anything about using the push button 4x4. They just tell you when to use overdrive and 4x4 or not, and give the standard warning about "multipurpose passenger vehicles" behaving differently on the road.

Oh. Must be a 3rd gen thing...

Mine has 2 stickers. 4x4 instructions and rollover warning.
