Thanks
Adam

send me a pm might be able to help. got to know what you have first. depending on what you have C4 or C6. i think they're set up the same not sure. on a C6 you stand it on end so it's sitting on the bell housing. should be like six bolts holding the housing on, once the bolts are removed tap housing with a dead blow hammer to brake the seal on the gasket [ sometimes they like to stick ] once the housing is free you should be able to pull the output shaft with the housing. it should be fair to say though the guy you bought that thing from really goomba'd your tranny. sounds like you need a new output shaft as well as tail housing. good luck

is it possible to change this while its in the truck? or would it be easier and less expensive to buy my buddys tranny with 67xxx

will it be easier to just buy a lower km trans and just swap it in

Most transmissions (C6 included) need to be completly dissassembled to remove the tailshaft. The tailshaft is one of the last parts to come out and one of the first parts to go in.
'88 Rangers did not come from the factory with a 3spd auto. The factory auto would be an A4LD 4spd auto.

not true on the older C6's, i've had the tailshaft off of two of them and all i had to do is remove the bolts and the tailshaft comes right off and the output shaft pulls right out.

I've rebuilt many C6 trannies, Every one of them had an internal clip which required the trans to be dissassembled. C6's ranging from '66 to '90. '66 being the first year for the C6. Hence the C6 designation.

don't take this personal, but i have one with the tailshaft housing off and the output shaft removed, if you want proof i will post pics so that you can see that there are no clips.:icon_confused: and i am confused as to how you think that because the C6 first appeared i '66 that that is how they came by the designation, actually i figured it out as a ford designation according to decade and year of production. but that still don't negate the fact that i have one tore down in my garage

The clip that holds the tail shaft in holds a bunch of the trannies components in place. It could be possible that someone assembled that trans without the clip but, I'm not sure about how the trans would work without it. I dissassembled a trans recently that the tailshaft slid out of but, that was because the shaft was broken.
Yes the C4 was first cast in '64 but, the C5 is an upgraded C4 it was NOT cast in '65.

yeah not sure on clip either, i've had three apart. the first was to swap tailhousings from tranny that was in my truck that was pretty much toast when i got it onto a tranny that i got from a friend and then after 6 years of abuse i had to do it all over again with a junk yard donor which didn't pan out so i had that one professionally done, and he didn't say anything about pieces being missing and i had told him the story on the tranny.
