How do I reinstall CD drivers?

My CD burner for some reason will not burn. Trying to use Windows Media Player. It keeps saying "insert blank disc" even when there is a blank disc in there. I ran this diagnostic thing on Microsoft's webiste. It said my drive is not capable of burning. All of my Google-ing shows that I need to uninstall and reinstall the CD drivers, but I can't find out how to do it. Can someone give me a complete step-by-step how-to so computer-illiterate morons like me can follow?? I have Windows XP.

Gonna sound stupid but have your cleaned the cd drive? I mean with the cd with lillte brushed ? Sprayed it out with a can of air from walmart. It may just not be recognizing the cd itself.

Get a new drive. They aren't that expensive and are easy to swap. I doubt it is a software/driver problem.

Media Player and burning discs

I have used media player more as a player and not a burner, it seems when Ihad insert a BLANK disc in the drive Media wants to "Ready" the disc, Its trying to format the disc. DONT let it do that it will waste your discs. Now For burning music or DVDs I use DVD Shrink and or ImgBurn, Those 2 more for makin back up of DVD movies, The ImgBurn will also do music and data, etc. Its free and I love the ease of use with it.
But when I am setting up to burn with media player I dont insert the disc until the very last second.

For DVD Shrink and ImgBurn search for them, and I really suggest everyone have these freebies within their reach.

Also if computer says insert blank disc and you know for a fact you put a blank in there, pull the disc out look at the data side and towards the center if you see a light ring about 1/16" -3/32" and maybe 1/4" in from center then its read and been screwed. Also if you check the properties and it says "NO FREE SPACE" pull it out and make a frisbee out of it.
