How do I pull codes on a 86 Ranger

I've heard pulling codes on these is a little different than plug a reader in under the dash and cross reference your codes.
 
holy cow....that write up on the Analog volt meter confused me.....anyway to put it in simpler terms?
 
yeah its pretty confusing for me too, anyone have any better way of describing it? it doesnt explain how you get the numbers. it just says to plug in the meter and get codes.....
 
It's a little confusing...you have to count sweeps of the needle in a six second time period to get the code? Any simplification of this process wouldn't be a bad thing apparently I'm not the only one who needs a better explanation. Thanks guys!
 
Hook up the circuit as shown, turn key on 'Run', watch the meter for sweeps.

The first will be a short engine ID, then a pause. Codes are repeated.

First group of codes will be KOEO, or hard faults.

There will be a single sweep after KOEO, then KOER, or stored memory codes.

Basically you count the sweeps,

1=sweep
.=pause

1...1..... would indicate an 11 or no faults.

1.1...1.1.1.1.....1.1.1...1.1..... would indicate 24 and 32..
