i bought an 8.8 from another TRS'er a couple days ago and i was wondering how i could tell if i have a L/S or not. the 8.8 is from an 91-94 explorer with 3.27's......here's some pics

cant look at the door, i bought it separate from the vehicle and i dont think the guy owns the vehicle anymore.
so i'm planning to regear and throw in a locker as well, what am i lookin at in terms of cost to be able to install a locker? wont i need a new carrier?
"drop-in" and "install them yourself" are 2 things I like to hear when i'm workin on my b2Yes, you can. Since you have a 'sploder axle you're limited to the Aussie locker for the drop-in style. I've heard good things about them. I think they're about $300 or so new and you can install them yourself.

Detroit lockers and the like are a whole replacement carrier. You bolt your new ring gear to it and set it in place.
Lock-right and the like just go right in the middle of things. If you didn't have to change the gear ratio, you'd just pull the bolt holding that big pin in the center, pull the pin, roll the spider gears out, pull the C-clips off the axles and slide the side gears out. Then the Locker goes right in where all that crap was.
But if you have to change gear ratios, you'll have to re-set the gears anyway and you'll have to pull the carrier. Lock-rights are intended more for people that don't have to change gears, but they can be used if you change or not.
how to tell ifyou have a L/S?
step one: wait until you have a nice rainstorm.
two: drive to the house of someone you do not like.
three: back into their yard.
four: put it in drive.
five: floor it..
six: count the rooster tails / peel out marks.
If you have two, you have a L/S.
If you have one, you have an open diff.
