how do I know if I have a L/S?

i bought an 8.8 from another TRS'er a couple days ago and i was wondering how i could tell if i have a L/S or not. the 8.8 is from an 91-94 explorer with 3.27's......here's some pics

Thats an open diff.. the spider gears gave it away

short of that id look at that tags if it has any
 
it had a tag on one of the diff cover bolts, but i'm not sure what to look for, thanks for letting me know tho:icon_thumby:
 
On the diff tag, second line it should have the gear ratio spelled out. Thus if it's a 3.27 geared axle it will read 3 27 for an open diff and 3L27 for a limited slip.

But yea, you got an open diff. A factory limited slip will have a big S spring jammed in there in the middle of things among other stuff.
 
Also, you can look on the door tag. A code that starts with R (R6, R7) should be L/S.

cant look at the door, i bought it separate from the vehicle and i dont think the guy owns the vehicle anymore.


so i'm planning to regear and throw in a locker as well, what am i lookin at in terms of cost to be able to install a locker? wont i need a new carrier?

Lol duh, I knew that. Costs depends on what type of locker you get. Some, like a Lock-Right or Aussie just drop in and replace the spider gears. Others, like a Detroit or ARB replace the whole carrier.
 
so i can use the open diff and just replace the spider gears?

i dont need a detroit or arb, this isnt gonna be that hardcore of a trail rig........as of right now
 
Yes, you can. Since you have a 'sploder axle you're limited to the Aussie locker for the drop-in style. I've heard good things about them. I think they're about $300 or so new and you can install them yourself.

Detroit lockers and the like are a whole replacement carrier. You bolt your new ring gear to it and set it in place.

Lock-right and the like just go right in the middle of things. If you didn't have to change the gear ratio, you'd just pull the bolt holding that big pin in the center, pull the pin, roll the spider gears out, pull the C-clips off the axles and slide the side gears out. Then the Locker goes right in where all that crap was.

But if you have to change gear ratios, you'll have to re-set the gears anyway and you'll have to pull the carrier. Lock-rights are intended more for people that don't have to change gears, but they can be used if you change or not.

"drop-in" and "install them yourself" are 2 things I like to hear when i'm workin on my b2

six: count the rooster tails / peel out marks.

If you have two, you have a L/S.
If you have one, you have an open diff.

That's quite a useful list, mate. I may have to try it, even though I already know I have an open diff. Just hope I don't get stuck.


Unfortunately it doesn't quite apply to the OP, since his axle is not installed yet.

yeah, that's the first thing i thought off....then i realized that my bronco didnt even run yet.....then i realized i was standing, looking down at my ring and pinion......then i remembered i was standing in my garage

lol, it's fun to dream though!

I wouldn't mind coming down an doing some work an helping ya out, but I must confess that I don't know anything really about setting up gears properly.
