Dana 35, I got the snap ring and outer part off, but how does this huge nut come off? it is hitting something solid when trying to turn it, yet there is no spot for a "wedge"....
If so there is a groove in the top of the spindle, there is a flat key that goes in there. If you get a magnetic pickup tool it will jump right out of there.
I pulled the hub apart on one a few weeks ago at a JY, forgot my magnet but luckily they let me borrow one. You can see the groove on the top of the spindle in the background it goes into.
Yes, a big hex socket. I don't remember the size off hand and my tools are an hour away. The socket I have is stamped steel, about 1/16" or slightly more in thickness.
The socket is a 2 3/8 rounded hex. As said, use it to snug the nut and load the bearing, then back it off and torque it to 16 inch-lbs. That torque setting is basically hand tight.

Thanks Again,
I have the special socket for Manual hubs with the 4 prongs, (been taking them apart for years), Instead of re-assembling the auto-hub set-up, going with NOS Ford Manual hubs and not looking back.
