I have a 1998 Ranger XLT 4WD 4speed auto, 4.0L. It has relatively low mileage at 180,900 KM. It has always been well maintained and I've never had any trouble with it.

Last week the Check Engine light came on. I disconnected the battery over night and that worked for about 10 miles, then it came back on.

I have booked for the Ford dealer to diagnose it, but then my husband suggested maybe I could find out the code and see what component is causing the trouble.

How do I bring up the codes? Do I need a special tool or divice?

you need an ODBII scanner / reader

alternatively lots of autoparts stores will read codes for free

Yep, what blackdemon said.

Take it to Autozone/ O'Reilly/ or Advance and see if they can pull the codes for you. most of these have the capability and will pull them for free.

If you are smart phone and somewhat tech savvy, you can buy a bluetooth adapter for your OBDII diagnostic port and get a smart phone app and pull the codes yourself. the bluetooth adapter is about 25 bucks on amazon and you can get the app for free, or if you get the paid version it is only 6 bucks.

If you have someone read the codes for you, write them down. Then, use an internet search (or post them here) to determine what they mean. Some auto parts people can be "not nice" and try to sell you a boat-load of stuff you don't need.

I would not take it to the dealer unless you absolutely have to. They're going to charge at least 1/2 hour shop time and goodness knows what else.
