How cheap could you build it?

97 ext cab 4 litre $800
parts to get it street legal $400
labour free
snorkel $10
cut fenders free
1 " washer spacers free
2" body lifty (not needed to fit tires just wanted it) 80 bucks
load helper air shocks (round 3" of lift) 120 bucks about 20 over stock replacements
33" duratracs $1033

so all in all for a street legal completley capible truck im in $2323 and its a daily driver plus if i wanted to i could weld the rear and make it even better off road but worse on the street which is why it hasnt been done

If i searched hard enough, I could snag

-a 4x4, 4 door explorer locally for around $5-600 with a blown trans.
-a non-running ranger with a decent stick shift for about the same
-used 33-35" mud tires for about $400

combine the 2 rigs into one, scrap the rest for about $200

plus the fluids and "little stuff".

Maybe around 2 grand total, if i was really cheap

With just a few mods, my $900 Bronco II would be fairly capable off road.

I found some manual locking hubs off of an '84 Ranger for my Dana 28 front axle to replace my auto-locking hubs. That costed me about $50.

30x9.50 R15 Trail Tracer All Terrain tires came on it and they have pretty good tread.

There isn't any lift on it or anything major done to it but I still feel like it is pretty capable for how close to stock it is. A guy at my school has a full size 1994 Ford Bronco with 33" tires and a small lift (2-3") and my Bronco II out wheeled him with ease. The B2's are just so much lighter and have smaller wheelbases.

If you find a nice, solid Ranger or Bronco II under $1000, I think with just a few mods, they would be very capable.

Still in the works, but here is what I am looking at!

88' BII W/88K-$300. Axles from a 78' F-250-$500. Homebuilt bumper- Free w/scrap metal. Brand New Smittybilt 8K Winch- $280. 5ea. 36X12.5-16.5 Tires/wheels- $400. Explorer springs-$40. YJ Front springs- Free. Brakelines-$65. F-250 Shock Towers- $26. Drivlines-$85. Still have shocks, steering and misc stuff to go, but I shouldn't be any more than $2500 and have a good running rig to take me most places Wa State has to offer. It's still more than I wanted to spend, but over 2 years, it hasn't been that bad!

well i beat ya to it, ya gotta be quicker on the draw...er...keys? lol
