How 'bout some sane, workable HP increases for le' Vulcan?

well doesnt preheated fuel atomize better? thats why motorcycles and carb companies put heaters between the carb (or in the carb) to preheat the fuel so itll atomize better making the burn cleaner, motorcycle/atv applications is to pass emissions, edelbrock has made heated carb risers for power for a long time, i can see overheated fuel making vapor pockets being a problem but wouldnt a little heat help a lil?

cooler fuel is more dense. cool fuel hitting a hot surface (like an intake valve or specially designed heater) atomizes quite well. warm fuel in the tank and lines doesnt do anybody any good.

3 years ago, a friend and I installed a rear turbo on my 88 Ranger GT with a 2.9 and 5 speed.

The turbo is an IHI from a TBird Turbo Coupe. Any turbo guru will tell you it is too small. It is not. I run high boost. The crappy gauge says 18 psi. I don't particularly believe it, but it's not 5 psi either.

It's a $50 turbo with $1000 worth of stuff to support it.
Vortech pump, with a stock type pump in the tank. Crane Boost retard. Cartech adj RRFPR. It uses a pump to scavenge the oil and sent it back to the valve cover. It's fed oil from a "T" at the pressure switch.

No muffler, that is where the turbo is. Tailpipe out the back. Reasonably quiet.

It's FAST. It drives like a hot powerstroke. I never rev it over 5 grand. I never speed shift it. I've had many turbo vehicles, and I know how to drive them.

It gets 26 at legal highway speeds. It gets about 17 passing everything, 80-85 Mph with hills. It gets lots of pissed off looks from SOHC Explorer and Escalade owners, as I pass them.

It's been at the Ford Carlisle shows for the last couple of years, and it is completely ignored, even with GT Turbo stockers on the bed, and pics with writeup in a book on the truck.

I just got a 3.0 Ranger, and I may do that truck, too. If you have pipe bending skills, and a pipe bender, it's pretty easy.

I have a 2.3 Turbo Ranger too.

:pray: You are definitely in the front ranks of Ranger Turbo STUDliness!

This thread went from sane and informative to outright EPIC! :icon_hornsup:

I guess my turbo lust went the way of the economy... downsizing from a 2-car garage to an open-air carport will do that to ya... probably revive it when I get a 2nd Ranger or Toyo Something as a DD. :icon_welder:

re: rear mount turbos
You couldn't have told me this would work before I did it. I had a million reasons why it wouldn't work. I've been into turbos for about 30 years. So we did it. It works great. I would do this to any car now.

If you can weld exhaust pipe, DO IT!

If you do all the things necessary for it live with any boost at all, you will have done what's needed to run 18 psi like me. Fuel, fuel, fuel, and boost retard.
