i checked my oil yesterday and it had alot of grit type stuff in it(the same stuff that was clogging my carb's pvc valve nipple. its not making any funny sounds or anything(besides the ticking lifters). how bad is this? i know it cant be good, what can i do to fix it? im working on a 347 swap but i dont know when ill get around to doing it, and i want to make the 2.8 last as long as possible. also what could the gritty stuff be, sludge? ive drained all the oil and put in about 4qrts of atf ran for 15 mins and drained it the last oil change, which was about 1500 miles ago

Get the oil changed and flush out that engine ASAP. It might have some sand in it somehow?? There should never be any grit in a motor. I have had all types of cars and trucks and I have never had any grit in my motor. You might have a valve somewhere letting in dirt to the motor??

valve seals get hard and brittle and break up when they get old. perhaps the grit is the rubber particles from the seals. just a thought.

valve seals have been replaced, maybe its left over grit. never had anything like that in any motor before, hasnt been like that until i hooked up a shop vac to the oil fill so i could replace my drain plug without losing oil. and yes that trick works. ill try to post some pics up of it tomorrow

Try a magnet - if it's metal, it will be attracted and you're in Big Trouble(tm). Otherwise, flush the system and you'll be fine.

druid - don't take my work on gas problems, I'm a diesel guy!

If you got the grit after the atf it is probaly just all the sludge falling into the pan from the upper end I doubt it made it past the filter you only need about half a quart of tranny oil in the engine to flush it out before oil changes. you dont want to run high rpms with it in there. Not alot you can do about it now just keep an eye on it and the oil pressure will tell you if the engine is dieing mine hold on the r in norm when hot.

:iamwithstupid:

Sounds like sludge that was broken up by the ATF to me.

Now that you have broken all that sludge free, get it out of there before it clogs you oil pump screen. Ask me how I know!! Change the oil.

This situation gets everyone the first time they see it. Not to worry, it's not the motor comming apart. It's you dipstick tube rotting from the inside out. Change it out or not. They run about $40 from Ford.

Haha....wait...what?

Far more likely that it is just carbon, varnish and carmelized oil coming off of things it was stuck to. Pour a gallon of diesel fuel in, let it sit for 30 minutes, drain and refill with oil. Problem solved.

without running it right? i got about 80 gallons of diesel for the tractors that i could use

btw not metal particles

Yes, not running. This just helps to break up sludge in the oil pan that otherwise would not come out.
