hotter coil

i had it scanned already and no codes came up...if i start with the (TSB)carbon build up how do i clean it up or rectify the problem? then which would i do next and test what's the problem?

thanks again for all the advice wicked and Big Jim:icon_cheers:

ford has a special cleaner (similar to seafoam, but more cancerous) that is run through the intake to clean the combustion chambers. you can try seafoam (search).

would this be a permanent fix or a bandaid? is there a fix for the TSB or is it just a fyi?

will it hurt the rings or anything and how would i get some and directions?

if carbon is your problem and if the seafoam is enough to take care of it, it will be a perminent fix. extreme cases require pulling the heads to manually clean the carbon out of the chambers.

hit the search for more info on seafoam.

^^^just did and i think i'll try the seafoam to see what that does first then go from there....is it hard on the rings or anything else? and if i read it right that after i get it (seafoam)into the intake i should let it sit for about 10 min. or so and then take her for a rip correct? will it just smoke white or blue too?

theres always some risk when de-carboning an engine that a chunk will get between the piston and cylinder wall and score the wall. your only other option is to remove the heads and chisle the carbon off by hand.

ive done water and chemical injection on dozens, maybe hundres of engines and ive never has a problem with scoring the cylinder walls.

thanks man for all your help i'll get at it tomorrow or the weekend...

My son's 99 3.0 had the damn noise so he swithed to a higher octane fuel. After a year or so it got the noise back with that fuel. He went to the local parts house and got 3 different cans of valve cleaner and installed a different can at each of the next 3 tanks of fuel..the ping went away and he is now using the lowest octane without any sounds..

Yeh I believe the motorcraft equivilent to Seafoam is part number: PM-3. Motorcraft Carburetor Tune-Up Sounds like many people only use it once, and do not bother changing their oil. Try it once, and see how it goes.

According to the TSB, here are the directions:

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Use Motorcraft Carburetor Tune-up Cleaner PM-3.

2. Carbon removal:
a. Disconnect canister purge line from throttle body.
b. Attach a vacuum line to the canister purge port.
c. At hot engine idle, allow the engine to ingest 1/2 to 2/3 of a can of Motorcraft Carburetor Tune-up Cleaner. Use caution not to ingest too quickly due to potential hydro-lock issues.
d Shut engine off and allow it to soak for one hour.
e. Start engine, allow engine to ingest the remainder of the Motorcraft Carburetor Tune-up Gleaner.
f. Remove vacuum line and re-install canister purge line.
g. Road test vehicle at 3500 RPM for 2-3 miles.
h. Repeat above procedure two times for a total of three times.
i. Change oil and filter.

3. Review the customers' driving habits
. The recommended drive cycle should include daily periods of engine operation above 3,000 RPM, such as a brisk acceleration from a stop position. This will break/burn the carbon off the piston head.

4. Use regular unleaded fuel, 87 Octane. Mid-grade and Premium fuels may increase the probability of carbon buildup, leading to a knock noise.

^^^^^^AWESOME guys!!!!!!! thank you 2 very much it's gotta help some:icon_thumby::icon_cheers:
