Yippee I have spark!!! Lots of backfiring and a few choice words- then the discovery that I had the cylinder firing order 180 degrees out (left bank\right bank mistake) so I am sure tomorrow will be the day- engine bay looks great without all that wiring everywhere

My question- why is my brand new coil getting so hot?? Is it not having the radio interferance thingy hooked up, is it not grounded correctly??

Hmmmm:scare:

What is your plug gap? A common cause of coil overheating is gapping the plugs too wide. What kind of a coil are you running? If you are Duraparked and using an OEM or equivalent coil from the 70's era you should not gap your plugs more than .040 inches. If you are using a hight output aftermarket coil on the Durapark system, then you can go wider, maybe .044. Also check your plug wires and connectors for integrity. Any breaches in integrity greatly increase resistance to the juice and that will also make the coil run hotter. One more thing. Where is your coil mounted? If you can, mount it on the fender away from engine heat.

Check the voltage when the key is in the run position. Ford designed the coil voltage to be about 9V when running, 12 only when starting. The coil was fed with a resistor wire, or 'voltage dropping' wire. I used a resistor from a Mopar (I think) on one I did years ago.
The DuraSpark coil puts out plenty of spark when fed 9 volts.
