Recent news suggests that Honda and Nissan might be discussing a potential merger. Many speculate this bold move is tied to the rapid rise of electric vehicles (EVs). Some articles even claim that the merger could be a strategic effort to counter the growing dominance of EVs in the market.

As two iconic brands that have long been leaders in internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEs), this potential partnership has everyone talking. Is it a game-changing strategy to take on the EV market? Or is it simply a way to stay relevant in a rapidly changing industry?

What’s Your Take?
*Are EVs truly the future, or do ICEs still hold strong advantages?
*What are the biggest strengths and weaknesses of EVs and ICEs in your opinion?
*If Honda and Nissan merge, could they become serious competitors in the EV space?
Let’s hear your thoughts! 🚗💡 Whether you’re team EV or team ICE—or somewhere in between—we’d love to know where you stand in this debate.

Nissans have never inspired confidence, and Hondas are for teenagers and old lady's.. so.. meh.

Only new jap scrap I care about at the moment is the upcoming mr2 and new Celica.

Right now it looks as though Honda and Nissan are talking more about extending cooperative agreements they already have than about an actual merger, though that has come up too. The real issue is that Nissan is in financial trouble from declining sales. That's partly because its vehicles now have a bad reputation for having problems, especially with radiator failures that cause coolant to leak into ATF and kill the transmissions. They could call it a merger, but Honda would de facto take over Nissan. Mitsubishi, which is struggling, might be part of this too.

Since this subject has come up, watch for news about Toyota and Mazda doing something similar. My opinion is that Mazda is just too small to make it as an independent automaker and meet all the global regulations being imposed, particularly EV mandates. These two have already extended cooperative agreements, including a car plant in Alabama. I think Toyota would simply take over Mazda.

We are deep enough into EV deployment now to realize that sales are not going to be what the pencil pushers suggested, this realization is leading a whole lot of manufacturers to collaborate (only in the EV realm) to prevent getting bankrupted by the EV venture. I think just like Ford and Chevy collaborating on transmissions (for 20 years), we are going to see fierce competitors getting in bed together to "keep from making a blunder" that costs them a ton of money when they fall behind the other guys.

Right now car prices have outpaced inflation and inflation is sky high, there are a lot of unsold new cars sitting on dealer lots (regular ICE vehicles as well as EV). Manufacturers are kinda desperate to save big money and collaborating like this is a huge money saver.

FWIW Toyota held Ford's hand with its hybrids.

and the radiator issue in nissans was also a huge issue on toyotas. that is where i first learned about the smod (strawberry milkshake of death) was in the toyota t100 and toyota 4runner forums. way before i heard of in the nissan forums

their radiators are both from the same manufacturer so thats why its on both companies as trouble to look for when buying a used rwd suv or truck of either manufacturer.

from what i read, honda and nissan are colaborating on the ev stuff, not everything. i think in the end though, nissan will fall under honda and mitsubishi will also fall under honda since both companies have had sales troubles for so long that they are in danger of going out of business. nissan stopped production on the titan even though it was increasing in sales numbers because it is a north america only model. they kept the armada (v8 full size suv) because its known as patrol in the rest of the world and competes very well against the toyota land cruiser in africa and australia.

but, i think honda will own both of those other companies soon enough.

I think they kinda swung it away from LC contender with the lastest gen. They actually kept the previous gen in production for the UN until 2023.

Nissan made a series of bad decisions, among them killing off the NV vans and the Titan trucks.

I’m with mtnrgr, 90’s 00’s EFI is easiest to keep going forever.

Or or two computers and a few wires. New cars using ethercat and 47 computers is hard to diagnose.

I’m surprised that no one is talking about GM’s fate with the new EV push. All GM’s intellectual property related to EV is owned by the Chinese. If U.S. goes full EV GM is out of business, close the doors.

If that happens, Mitsubishi and Renault will have to have their portions of stock ownership bought out since those two and Nissan are in an alliance with each other and own stock in each other.

Honda is certainly not as good as they used to be and I think bringing Nissan into the fold will only drag them down further. Nissan used to make a pretty decent product but that ship has sailed. Probably about the time the alliance was created, maybe sooner.

Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like any of the major vehicle makers are what they used to be. A good chunk of it is probably because of the integrated electronics and safety/environmental certifications they have to meet. Vehicles have become way too complicated for those reasons, meeting customer demands for more comfort items and technology, as well as other things.
