so i recently ran into issues with my ignition switch. i then ran around with using a auto zone starter switch. the wires i used were the power wire off my subwoofer system back in the day. i'm definitly not a electrical guy but i spoke with a friend who said it seemed like the right size for the power going through it. it worked for the last few weeks while i was troubleshooting my 2400rpm stumble. however today i went to start it, and it wouldn't even crank due to what i thought was a dead battery, however the start switch was smoking. obviously i disconnected the negative battery for now, i just need to know if i need another switch or what.

can ya hell me out?

maybe i wired it incorrectly? left the start solenoid hooked up like usual. and ran a wire from the starter to the switch and then from the switch to the positive terminal of the battery

Did you run a direct connection from the battery to the starter through an auto zone switch? Relay is there so that all of that current doesn't pass through the ignition switch, which would burn it up. I would either fix the ignition switch, or use the factory relay to pass the power along to the starter directly from the battery from the bypass switch. Never run high current circuits through switches. Also make sure that there is no short in the wiring - like where the wire is passing through the fire wall. Can test the switch with a test light or with a meter, but it sounds like it's toast.

i did. but with more research i learned that the best way it so run a 14gauge wire from the battery to a push button switch. then the other terminal on the switch goes to the small wire on the starter solenoid. however i still have some issues that i need to work one.

with my setup i will still need my key in the on position. this is what i was wanting verse canceling the key part...
