Hey guys just got my 351w and c4 tranny all situated in my 83 ranger. still got one thing left to do though gotta hook up a shifter of some sort. my truck was originally a standard and was wondering if anyone on here ever built their own floor shifter for this swap. thanks

I would buy a hurst or some other aftermarket shifter but as everyone knows money can be a little tight these days so i figured that i would try to make one first for temporay use.

I would make a factory shifter work. It's not that hard to do and you can get whatever look out of it you want. I personally used a foxbody mustang shifter off an AOD. Its a cable shifter that fits pretty well... just have to run the cable in a round about way and fab up a mounting point..

It's one of those things where you can go many routes for success. I chose to save some $ and maintain a stock appearance.

I used a B&M Unimatic. It isn't really a performance shifter... just a floor shifter.

Looks nice and shifts nice though, I like it. :icon_thumby:

got it figured out made my own shifter using a old 5 spd shifter rod. then i welded a bracket to my shifter coming out of the tranny connected both with a steel rod. still gotta put in park and reverse lockouts but i can shift from inside the cab now

The floor shifter assembly from a Bronco II may bolt right into your 83, it did on my 89, then all you need is either a shifter rod if you have a floor shifter C-4 or a cable assembly if it's a column shifter C-4. Pull back the carpet and see if there's a floor plate bolted in that the 5 speed shifter hole is in.
