home made bearing press


Looks like the tools he is using are mostly pieces from a universal ball joint press set and one big-ass bolt.

when i do 2002 up sploders you should see the look people have when i show them shit like this.....
 
You don't need a press for those. You may need to tap the races out with a hammer and screwdriver... but that press would be a waste of money for you.

He's correct, wheel bearings just slide on the spindle. I used a gear puller to pull off my old inner wheel bearing since they were junk anyways.
 
Good video but man it was driving me nuts how he kept calling the snap ring a c-clamp!

And also you shouldn't push the spindle into the bearing like that. It puts a lot of pressure on the bearing and can cause premature failure.

After fighting with my wife's explorers rear bearings, I'd gladly pay $90. I had an arbor press to use and it still was a major pain. Of course my knuckles were a lot rustier than the one in the video.

So I don't need any sort of special tools? Just my basic hand tools?
 
The only "special" tool may be the socket for the outer spindle nut if you don't have one.

I'll probably have to buy that one. I have 1-1/4" and 1-1/8". But that's good to know. Thanks for telling me you saved me 100$. I just assumed these bearings were pressed. As I have yet to do wheel bearings that aren't pressed.

I really like the looks we get when the customer watches us take the old hub and bearings out. We get the timken hub and bearing sets because it is the best bang for the buck, so we torch them out.

This is what you are going to be after. It's not the same as the CV style nut. I got mine at NAPA for about 15 dollars, but it's been over 10 years ago.

I've seen some people just use a screwdriver and hammer to get the nut off, but I personally like using the correct tool.

Ahhh, yes. I forgot about that damn setup. I was assuming it was manual. If you do have auto hubs, be sure to remove the "key" as well - or you'll be sorry.

You will also need a new nut and spindle as they will both be destroyed if you forget the key.
 
Been there done that. Luckily the u pull it has many rbv's.

When I did my manual hub conversion, I had no idea that key was in there. I had owned nothing but manual hubs up until then. I was fortunate enough to quit trying after I realized that there had to be something else keeping it from turning. IIRC, I pulled the key out with a magnet.
