hollow clunking

I replaced all four ball joints and shocks, checked my wheel bearings for play, and my tie rod ends do not seem to be worn. But I still have some hollow sounding, kinda clunky noise when going over rough roads. What else should I look at replacing? Anything that is notorious for wearing out?

Thanks for the insight,
Mike

do you mean the link bushings, or the main bushings supporting the bar itself? The link bushings seem to be ok (i think), but I do remember seeing a bit of a gap around the bar. I forgot about that, maybe I'm getting some noise from that.

thanks for sparking my memory

Mike

Update:

In addition to all the ball joints being replaced, the sway bar bushings and links are now all new. However I can still feel something clunking a bit through the steering wheel. The steering does not have any slop, and pushing/pulling on the wheels does not reveal any slop. The only thing left I can see is the bushings connecting the lower A-arms to the frame, anything else?? I feel this play when the truck moves in a back and forth motion, not turning.

Thanks for any further help,

Mike

Funny you should say that, I just replaced a both u-joints last night, as the rear one was frozen. I didn't notice if the clunking was gone, I guess because I was so focused on listening for any of the noises the u-joint was previously making. I'll have to pay careful attention when I leave work today.

Would a bad u-joint be able to be felt in the steering wheel??

This would be a fantastic two for one fix if so!

Thanks for that insight, I never would have guessed that I could feel a u-joint in the wheel.

I've also been tracking down a clunking noise on my '98. It's a weird banging noise, that sounds a little like someone hitting a steel barrel with a hammer. I've tracked it back to the upper and lower insulators. They are availble from Moog. I haven't replaced them yet (because of the amount of work involved), but I'm fairly sure that's my issue... maybe you're having the same problem.

by insulaters do u mean on the ends of the coils? since day 1 my 2007 has felt like something is loose up front. over small bumps and going slow over speed bumbs.. the front end is super stiff, which i dont mind. but stiff and sloppy, pretty lameeee
